π Sowing Seeds of Change: Marking a Decade of COS Community Empowerment!
Food to Power, formerly known as Colorado Springs Food Rescue, is celebrating its 10th anniversary.
Originating as a student project, the nonprofit now operates its 3.7-acre Hillside Hub Campus, offering gardening beds, greenhouses, kitchens, and classes. They grow produce for the community, transform food waste into compost, host grocery distributions, and educate on growing and cooking food.
Amid rising needs due to the pandemic, supply chain issues, and limited healthy food options, Food to Power aims to address health equity and foster a healthier food system.
They are exploring strategic options, including potential expansion in other parts of Colorado.
They are hosting a celebratory event today, October 23 from 6:30 - 7:30 PM at their location: 1090 S Institute St, COS. Click for details.
π Navigating Tragedy: Journey Towards Security and Healing
Club Q owner, Matt Haynes, reflects on the aftermath of the mass shooting during which the shooter plead guilty. The plea was part of an agreement reducing the number of charges against them from 305 to 53. The shooter pleaded guilty to five counts of first degree murder, 46 counts of attempted first-degree murder, and two counts of bias-driven crimes.
Haynes has faced both support and hate following the mass shooting that occurred at the nightclub, leading him to enhance security measures, making the club "bulletproof" as it prepares for an eventual reopening.
Despite an outpouring of community support, the necessity for such measures paints a somber picture of the prevalent gun violence in the US. Haynes, though compelled to fortify his business, expresses the need for societal change.
ππ¬ Beyond Books: Pikes Peak Library's Digital Wonderland Unveiled!
The Pikes Peak Library District celebrates its continuous surge in electronic content usage, with over two million digital items checked out for the third consecutive year.
Before the pandemic, people were skeptical about digital content from the library. However, despite returning to normalcy post-pandemic, the demand for e-books and various online resources remains high.
In addition to e-books, the library district offers a diverse range of digital content, including videos, movies, TV shows, audiobooks, and music through platforms like Freegle. While physical books are still popular, the library is committed to expanding its online offerings, ensuring members have access to a wide array of resources.
π Silent Witnesses: Southeast Colorado Springs Shootings Raise Concerns!
Early Sunday morning, multiple properties in southeast Colorado Springs were targeted in a series of shootings, with more than 140 shell casings discovered at various locations.
The Police Department received over 10 calls reporting gunshots within a two-hour timeframe. The first incident occurred at Copper Creek Apartments, followed by subsequent shootings in nearby areas. Despite the intensity of gunfire, no injuries have been reported.
Law enforcement found shell casings at each scene but lacked information about the assailants. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities urge anyone with relevant details to contact CSPD (719-444-7000) or Crime Stoppers anonymously (719-634-7867).
π§Introducing: Mindful Moments Series
Welcome to this weekβs new series: Mindful Moments!
Over the next five days, we'll explore simple yet powerful mindfulness practices that can transform your daily life and boost your overall well-being.
πββοΈ Find Calm Amidst Chaos: Unleash the Magic of Mindful Breathing Today!
In our fast-paced lives, it's easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of thoughts and emotions, leaving us feeling overwhelmed and disconnected. Mindful breathing offers a gentle anchor to the present moment, allowing us to find calm amidst the chaos. By taking just 5 minutes each day to focus on our breath, we can cultivate a sense of peace, clarity, and relaxation, even in the midst of a busy day.
Find a quiet space where you can sit comfortably. Close your eyes and bring your attention to your breath. Notice the sensation of each inhale and exhale, without trying to change it in any way. Whenever your mind wanders, gently guide it back to the breath. Practice this for 5 minutes today.
Remember, just a few minutes of mindful breathing can make a world of difference in your day. By cultivating a deeper awareness of your breath, you'll discover an incredible tool for relaxation and grounding.
Stay tuned for tomorrow's tip, where we'll explore another exciting facet of mindfulness that will help you thrive in your daily life.
