๐ซPlastic Out, Pay Up: New Year, New Laws for Colorado
As 2024 begins, Colorado introduces more than 20 new laws, several of which take immediate effect. Notable changes include an increase in the minimum wage and the elimination of plastic bags in stores.
The Equal Pay for Equal Work Act is enhanced, requiring employers to share job opportunities with existing employees and establish a wage complaint process.
The FAMLI Act extends paid parental and medical leave, funded by both employers and employees.
Additionally, the state enacts a polystyrene ban for food service, eliminating single-use containers and plastic bags at grocery stores.
These legislative measures mark Colorado's commitment to social, economic, and environmental progress.
๐ป Grizzly Getaway: Zoo's Transformation
Cheyenne Mountain Zoo's grizzly bear area will close for renovations this month, promising new perspectives for visitors to view Emmett and Digger. The project aims to enhance the bears' habitat and accommodate potentially orphaned cubs. The estimated reopening is in early summer 2024, with noticeable changes to the boardwalk and the introduction of a playful elevator tower feature you will enjoy watching the bears play in.

๐บ๏ธ COS Trivia: Fountain Colony's rebrand?
Did you know that the town that we know and love, Colorado Springs, was initially named Fountain Colony when it was founded in 1871 by General William Jackson Palmer. The name "Fountain Colony" was derived from the nearby Fountain Creek and was part of Palmer's vision to create a high-quality resort community.
However, the name of the town was changed to Colorado Springs by 1879, a name that had been previously used by a western explorer named Fitz to describe the region. The new name, Colorado Springs, was likely chosen to evoke the healthful and restorative connotations of natural mineral springs, which were a popular draw for tourists during that era. The nearby Manitou Springs, known for its mineral springs, was part of the appeal of the area and contributed to the choice of the new name. This change in name was part of the early development and marketing of the town to attract residents and visitors seeking a healthful climate and scenic beauty.
๐ Avalanche Triumph: Home Win Highlights Team Dominance
Colorado Avalanche secures a 3-1 home victory against the San Jose Sharks, with Valeri Nichushkin's late third-period goal sealing the win. Nathan MacKinnon's impressive home performance continues, contributing to the team's success. The defensive lineup limits the Sharks' offensive opportunities, supporting goaltender Alexandar Georgiev in a game that showcased both resilience and strategic play.
Watch the Avalanche (23-11-3) host the New York Islanders, 7 p.m. tonight at Ball Arena.
