🚧 Marksheffel Makeover in Progress

Marksheffel & Barnes Rd construction

Another road construction update that will impact your travel if you need to pass through this area. The Marksheffel Road widening project is well underway, addressing the long-overdue need for improved road infrastructure in the northeastern part of the city. This initiative, aimed at enhancing traffic flow and accommodating the area's growth, began last summer and is currently in its initial phase, focusing on a 1.2-mile stretch from North Carefree Circle to Tamlin Road.

Key milestones, such as the completion of water line installation and construction at the Barnes intersection, are underway. The project, slated for completion by 2026, encompasses widening the road to include two lanes in each direction, along with a center median, better drainage, and upgraded pedestrian pathways. The Marksheffel corridor's expansion is a response to the rapid development in the region, notably around the Banning Lewis Ranch subdivision. Despite some concerns about increased traffic, residents welcome the overdue improvements, anticipating enhanced accessibility and economic opportunities along the corridor.

πŸ“΅ COS 911: Backup Keeps City Safe

Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) and Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) encountered service interruptions during yesterday’s AT&T outage, impacting their reliance on AT&T FirstNet, a dedicated cellular service for first responders. CSFD experienced disruptions from approximately 3:45 a.m. to 4:35 a.m., affecting mobile phones and computers crucial for accessing call information and navigation.

Similarly, CSPD reported outages lasting 90 minutes to two hours, although operations remained unaffected due to communication through radios.

Despite the reliance on backup methods, the outage highlighted potential strains on dispatchers and the importance of robust communication systems for emergency responses. NBC News attributed the outage to a process error rather than a cyberattack, affecting thousands of users nationwide.

πŸ’» Internet Access at Risk: Coloradans Brace for Changes

The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), introduced in late 2021, has provided free internet access to eligible individuals in Colorado. However, approximately 250,000 Coloradans face the prospect of losing this vital service as Congress has yet to secure funding to sustain the program beyond April, as reported by the Federal Communications Commission. A local internet provider expressed concern over the potential discontinuation, highlighting the program's significance for individuals residing in subsidized or transitional housing, including veterans or those transitioning out of homelessness.

Access to the internet is crucial for essential tasks such as job hunting and housing searches. Organizations like Mt. Carmel Veterans Service Center emphasize the importance of internet access for medical appointments, foreseeing a surge in demand for free wifi services if the ACP ceases. Amidst uncertainty, ACP participants are being notified of possible bill changes, prompting exploration of alternative federal programs or lower-cost internet plans.
