🔥 West Monument Creek Fire 50% Contained

USAFA remains closed to the public today as firefighters achieve 50% containment of the West Monument Creek Fire, lifting pre-evacuation notices for nearby housing areas.

🔥 Ft Carson Fire Update

A fire near Fort Carson, initially estimated at nearly 2000 acres, is now at 700 acres and approximately 80% contained. No people or structures are threatened. The fire originated near an impact area, but the cause remains unknown. Smoke may be visible from Colorado Highway 115 and I-25.

A second wildland fire near Fort Carson started around 11:30 a.m. on Monday near Training Range 153. It has affected about 100 acres with high winds expected to have played a role. No connection has been established with the first fire. No structures or personnel are at risk, and the cause is yet to be determined.

🏢 Controversial Briargate Project Moves Ahead

Colorado Springs City Council approved the Royal Pine Apartments in Briargate despite backlash from some Pine Creek residents concerned about traffic, safety, and property values. The decision came after a six-hour meeting where council members voted 6-1 to move forward with the project, providing 232 units of workforce housing. The developer plans to rent units at or below 30-70% of the area median income. Despite objections, legal action from residents is anticipated.

🛠️ Mayor’s Push for Entry-Level Condos

Mayor Yemi backs Senate Bill 24-106 aimed at boosting homeownership opportunities, citing the need for more accessible housing options, particularly entry-level condos. The bill aims to reform construction defect laws to streamline dispute resolution and encourage condo development, addressing a critical issue identified through community engagement.

🍻 Trivia Tuesday: Old Colorado City

It’s trivia time! The Union of Pioneers and Prohibition

Originally established as Colorado City in 1859 (currently named Old Colorado City), this lively town was a stark contrast to the more reserved and prohibitionist Colorado Springs. Faced with a declining economy due to the demise of the Gold Rush period, and a growing push for prohibition, it inevitably merged with its neighbor.

In what year did Colorado City, once a haven for miners and merrymakers alike, become annexed into Colorado Springs?
