π Grazing Goats in Bear Creek
The Bear Creek Park Garden Association has announced the return of their weed management team, consisting of 500 to 800 goats, for the growing season. This marks the 25th year of the goats' presence in Bear Creek Regional Park.
Supported by donations, these cashmere goats are expertly equipped to control weeds without the need for harmful herbicides. Their unique digestive system allows them to consume noxious weeds without adverse effects, preventing seed germination and promoting the growth of native grasses.
The practice of using goats for weed management, wildfire mitigation, and soil regeneration is gaining popularity nationwide. In Colorado Springs, various homeowner groups have also enlisted these goats to mitigate wildfire risks in their neighborhoods.
π Make a Difference: CityServe Returns
Colorado Springs residents have the chance to give back to our city through the annual CityServe event hosted by COSILoveYou. This city-wide volunteer initiative welcomes everyone to participate in addressing real needs in the Pikes Peak region. By collaborating with various organizations and partners, COSILoveYou aims to support education, combat homelessness, and alleviate food insecurity. The upcoming event, scheduled for May 3 and 4, encourages volunteers of all ages to join in serving schools, parks, nonprofits, and neighborhoods.
Interested individuals can sign up for volunteer slots on the COSILoveYou website, where over 1,500 opportunities are available, including options suitable for families and children. It's an excellent chance for community members to come together and demonstrate their love for our city.
π Drive Sober: The Heat Is On Alert
As spring arrives, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) launches The Heat Is On Spring Events DUI enforcement period from April 4 to April 24. Collaborating with the Colorado State Patrol (CSP) and 73 local law enforcement agencies, CDOT aims to combat impaired driving during this 21-day initiative.
Increased law enforcement presence, including saturation patrols and sobriety checkpoints, will target impaired drivers statewide. CSP emphasizes the risks of impaired driving and urges motorists to plan sober rides, especially during weekend nights when impaired driving-related crashes are most prevalent. Last year's enforcement period saw 621 DUI arrests, emphasizing the ongoing need for vigilance.
Safe-ride options like rideshare services and public transit are encouraged, and CDOT provides DUI checkpoint footage to raise awareness about the consequences of impaired driving. The campaign underscores the preventability of crashes.
π¨ Car Crashes Into Police Station
Yesterday afternoon, April 3, a car veered off course and collided with the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) Stetson Hills substation. The incident occurred as the car was departing the ENT Credit Union near Barnes Road and Tutt Boulevard, with the driver reportedly losing control due to distraction. Subsequently, the vehicle careened down a hill and struck the north side of the substation. Fortunately, no officers sustained injuries in the accident. However, both the driver and a passenger were hospitalized with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
π₯ Spinach Artichoke Lasagna
This vegetarian recipe is freshly flavored, hearty and cheesy, but not too heavy. Itβs a marvelous option for date night at home or a special Sunday dinner.
