🕶️ Safety First: Viewing Tips for Solar Eclipse

With the solar eclipse this Monday, April 8th, experts are emphasizing safety measures for viewing the event. While the path of totality offers the best viewing experience, Colorado Springs residents will witness about two-thirds coverage of the sun. It's crucial to use eclipse glasses that meet international safety standards (ISO 12312-2) to avoid permanent eye damage, as regular sunglasses are insufficient.
Eclipse glasses can be found at select retailers such as Walmart, Target, 7 Eleven, Lowes, Staples, eye doctor’s offices and some libraries in Colorado Springs. We recommend you call before you go as supplies are running out. The peak viewing time in the springs is at 12:39 p.m. on Monday.
💼 Helping Heroes: Salvation Army's Veteran Hub
In a significant move to support veterans and their families, the Salvation Army unveiled the Supportive Services Center for Veteran Families (SSVF) in Colorado Springs. Located on W. Rio Grande St., near S. Nevada Ave. and E. Cimarron St., the facility aims to provide essential assistance in housing and financial services. Sallie Clark, Military Affairs Adviser for the City of Colorado Springs, emphasized the significance of the center, given that a third of El Paso County's population comprises military families. Captain Doug Hanson highlighted the center's role in advocating for veterans, citing examples such as negotiating rental terms to facilitate housing for those facing difficulties due to past evictions.
💆♂️ Colorado Spa Employee Checks
A new bill in Colorado is set to tackle human trafficking by enforcing federal background checks for all massage facility employees statewide. Championed by Republican Representative Anthony Hartsook, the legislation seeks to identify and deter spas involved in human trafficking activities. Currently, local governments oversee standards for massage facilities, but if the bill passes, federal background checks will become mandatory.
The initiative stems from previous exposés by KRDO13 Investigates, revealing numerous illicit spas in Colorado Springs engaged in illegal activities. Despite in May 2022, the City of Colorado Springs passed a law making it illegal for a spa to operate without a valid massage business license, some spas continued to operate unlawfully, prompting the need for stricter regulations. The bill, having cleared committee, awaits a vote on the House floor.

⚠️ Warning: Sexually Violent Predator in E. Springs

CSPD has announced that Michael Anthony Trujillo, a sexually violent predator on supervised release parole, has relocated and is registered at 4010 Wakely Dr. on the east side of Colorado Springs. Trujillo's criminal record includes convictions for attempted sexual assault on a child, attempted second-degree assault, possession of a controlled substance, assault, attempted escape, and escape. Additionally, he was convicted of failure to register as a sex offender in Pueblo County in 2019. Trujillo is one of 17 sexually violent predators currently registered in Colorado Springs, and his presence in the community warrants awareness and vigilance.
