🏗️ New Bid for Mixed-Use Site at Garden of Gods
The Colorado Springs Planning Commission will review a proposal for a mixed-use development at the intersection of W. Garden of the Gods and N. 30th St. The plan, named Arrowswest, seeks to rezone nearly seven acres for a development that would include 222 apartments and commercial spaces. This site was previously the subject of a rejected proposal in 2021 due to safety concerns related to its location near areas affected by the 2012 Waldo Canyon wildfire. The decision by the commission will influence a city council recommendation, with the council's current members different from those in 2021.
🕶️ Downtown Gains Blind Advocacy Support Group
Colorado Springs welcomes a new Downtown chapter of the National Federation of the Blind, joining the established Olympic City chapter in advocating for the rights and empowerment of people with visual impairments in any capacity. The new chapter, introduced at a recent meeting, is still finalizing its permanent location and will hold monthly gatherings to support its members. Kevan Worley, chairman of the chapter, highlighted the active and fulfilling lives that visually impaired individuals can still lead.
🥅 Colorado Springs Selected NCAA 2025
Colorado Springs has been selected as the venue for the 2025 NCAA Division II Soccer Championships, with games set to be held at Weidner Field. This decision is a testament to the city's strategic development under the City for Champions initiative, which aims to attract significant events and boost tourism. Weidner Field, primarily used by the Switchbacks soccer team, serves multiple purposes, including hosting concerts and conferences, demonstrating its versatility and importance in securing such a prestigious sports event.
🚨 Funeral Home Scam Unearths New Charges
Latest update on Jon and Carie Hallford, who owned Return to Nature Funeral Home, were back in court, indicted on federal charges for fraudulent use of approximately $900,000 in pandemic relief funds for personal expenses, including luxury goods and vacations.
The ongoing federal and state cases against the Hallfords reveal long-standing financial issues and allegations of deceitful behavior. Their business practices led to significant financial and emotional distress for numerous families, as evidenced by the discovery of 190 decaying bodies at their facility in 2023.

📘 Trivia Challenge: Colorado's State Bird
The Lark Bunting 🐦 is Colorado's official state bird, formally designated on April 29, 1931. It was chosen primarily because it represented the eastern plains of Colorado, an important agricultural region 🌾 that had not been symbolized among the state's official emblems.
💬 Whose advocacy efforts were instrumental in the Lark Bunting being named the state bird? |
