π¨βπ CSFD Gain Vital Health Safety Net
In a unanimous decision, the City Council approved the Colorado Springs Fire Department's enrollment in the Colorado Firefighter Heart, Cancer, and Behavioral Health Benefits Trust. This trust provides crucial assistance to firefighters dealing with significant health issues. With the rising risks firefighters encounter, including exposure to harmful substances and heightened cardiac strain, such support is essential. The trust covers cardiac, cancer, and behavioral health benefits, aiming to alleviate the burdens faced by firefighters and their families. Joining the trust incurs no immediate cost to the CSFD until 2027, thereafter integrated into the department's budget. The initiative stemmed from collaborative efforts among CSFD leadership, firefighter unions, and city administration.
π₯ Fire Safety Series: CSFD Readies Communities
Colorado Springs Fire Department launched their "Living with Wildfire" town hall series yesterday, aiming to equip residents in the city's Wildland Urban Interface with wildfire readiness. In their first meeting, emergency planners emphasized the year-round fire risk, particularly as vegetation regrows in the spring. They highlighted the vulnerability of communities bordering the foothills, spanning from the Air Force Academy to NORAD and Cheyenne Mountain. With limited fire resources compared to the vast city area, firefighters urge homeowners to mitigate property to curb fire hazards. Public participation in reducing fuel load is crucial for community safety. *We will list the May and June town halls in our Events section below, as they come up.
π Drug Disposal Day, Sat April 27
Colorado is set to participate in the DEA's National Drug Take Back Day on April 27. The event provides an opportunity for residents to discard unwanted, unused, or expired prescription medications at multiple locations. Operated anonymously and free of charge, the initiative aims to promote safe disposal of prescription drugs to prevent misuse or environmental contamination. Notable exclusions from accepted items include needles, thermometers, and illicit drugs. To locate the nearest Drug Take Back location, visit the DEA's website.
