🥇 Colorado Springs #3 in Best Places to Live
Colorado Springs ranked third-best city to live by U.S. News & World Report. Rankings are based on 4 indexes: Quality of Life, Value, Desirability, and Job Market. We scored highest in the Desirability Index, reflecting its strong appeal among survey respondents. The city also performed well in the Job Market and Quality of Life indexes, which evaluate factors such as unemployment rates, average salaries, crime rates, education quality, and environmental factors.
However, the city ranked 58th in the Value Index, primarily due to housing affordability issues. Despite these challenges, local leaders are pleased with the ranking and are focusing on improvements in housing, childcare, and education.
🚗 Memorial Day Holiday Travel Tips from CDOT
As the summer travel season begins, Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) anticipates heavy traffic in Colorado Springs and along the Front Range. If you’re traveling outside the Springs, major routes especially westbound on I-70 on Friday and Saturday, and eastbound from Eagle County to Denver on Memorial Day, will see increased congestion. CDOT will suspend construction projects from Friday noon until Tuesday to improve traffic flow. US 50 remains closed between Gunnison and Montrose.
Travelers can consider exploring Colorado’s Scenic and Historic Byways or use CDOT’s Bustang and Pegasus transit services. Bustang offers routes between Colorado Springs, Denver, and Fort Collins, while Pegasus serves the I-70 west corridor. Further details available on CDOT’s website.
🏠 Mayor Addresses Housing Crisis in Springs
The Common Sense Institute's (yes, that's a real thing 😏) recent study highlights a severe housing shortage in Colorado Springs, with a deficit ranging from 16,554 to 27,360 units. This shortage, driven by high demand and insufficient development, has led to a significant decline in housing affordability. The city requires 32,000 to 43,000 new housing units by 2028 to meet the growing population's needs and address the current deficit.
Mayor Yemi acknowledges the critical findings and stresses the importance of evidence-based solutions to enhance housing options and affordability. He emphasizes the need for strategic policy choices and community partnerships to ensure sustainable growth and housing accessibility for all residents.
