🏰 Historic Site Gets New Life in Colorado Springs
Union Printer’s Home Courtesy of Abigail Beckman, KRCC
The historic Union Printers Home, across from Memorial Park, in Colorado Springs is set for a major transformation into Printers Hill after the City Council approved key zoning changes and variances. This 26-acre property will be redeveloped into a mixed-use site featuring residential, commercial, and retail spaces, with an emphasis on preserving the iconic 132-year-old "castle."
The project is spearheaded by local investors who aim to create an accessible community hub while maintaining the site's historical significance. Community feedback (click to fill out the survey) is integral to the planning process, ensuring the development reflects the needs and heritage of the surrounding neighborhoods. Construction is expected to begin in 2026, marking a significant investment in the city's cultural heritage. *Source
⚡ Colorado’s Lightning Safety Week Tips
Colorado faces significant lightning activity, with around 530,000 strikes each year, making safety awareness essential. During Lightning Safety Week, officials remind residents of the dangers and provide tips to stay safe. Peak lightning hours align with popular outdoor activity times, and lightning can strike far from a visible storm. In El Paso County, the highest number of fatalities have occurred, emphasizing the need for caution. Safety measures include unplugging electronics, avoiding water, and seeking proper shelter during storms. The city stresses preparedness to balance outdoor enjoyment with safety.
🚧 Construction Woes Hit Local Businesses
Courtesy of KRDO
Ongoing construction on Airport and Academy in Colorado Springs has created a challenging situation for local businesses, leading to significant declines in sales. Business owners, have had to adapt by offering delivery-only services or considering relocation due to the reduced customer access and increased detour times.
The city, recognizing the adverse effects of the construction, is working on solutions such as improving access points and enhancing signage. Two of the four lanes are expected to reopen within one to two months, which should help alleviate some of the traffic issues. Residents are encouraged to continue supporting these businesses during this difficult time to maintain community strength and resilience.
