For years, Jasmine Smith filled her home with these sweet aromas as a stay-at-home mom. In late 2025, she realized she wanted a passion project of her own. A traditional job simply did not fit her family life. With her husband Xakk cheering her on, she took a leap of faith and transformed her kitchen into a certified cottage bakery.

Today, Chaos Crumble Cottage Bakery creates indulgent, small-batch treats that are unapologetically fun. Picture yourself strolling up to their charming porch stand at 7245 Omaha Blvd in the 80915 neighborhood, greeted by the smell of fresh bread and fluffy donuts. Jasmine and Xakk pour their hearts into every bite. They also give back to our community by participating in events that provide meals for those experiencing homelessness.

El Paso County is asking neighbors to help shape the new Countywide Stormwater Master Drainage Plan, and your street-level knowledge is exactly what they need.

The plan evaluates drainage systems across unincorporated El Paso County, identifying where flooding, erosion, and infrastructure damage need attention first. Flag problems in your neighborhood, such as ponding, damaged culverts, drainage concerns, using the interactive map. Sign up for project updates while you're there.

If you received a speed camera ticket between July 21 and Sept 1, you may have been charged twice what you owed. A software update by Verra Mobility, the company managing Colorado Springs' speed camera program, accidentally changed internal location codes and doubled fines at 34 of 1,212 camera locations.

2,764 drivers were billed $80 instead of the standard $40. Every ticket issued was valid, just the fine amount that was wrong.

Already paid? A $40 refund check is headed to your mailbox within the next four to six weeks. Haven't paid yet? The corrected $40 amount is already reflected online and at the courthouse, no action needed on your part. Full Story

Every fall, the drive out to Happy Apple Farm in Penrose is one I look forward to. After past years with crop problems, I always make the trip hoping this will finally be a good apple year. This year, unfortunately, is not that year.

An April frost dropped temperatures to 22 degrees on April 18, killing the blossoms just as the trees were blooming. It's the second consecutive lost harvest for owner Tony, something that hasn't happened in the farm's 42-year family history. Nearby Third Street Apples has closed for the entire 2026 season as a result.

But Happy Apple Farm is opening anyway because Tony diversifies. The pumpkin patch opens Sat, Sept 19, with free hayrides, a country store, and pets welcome. No admission, no parking fees. After opening day, hours are Fri-Sun, 9am-4:30pm at 1190 1st St in Penrose. Still worth the drive. Full Story

And here's my little fall tradition: I usually make a day of it and head over to Colon Orchards in Cañon City after visiting Happy Apple Farm. It's not too far from Penrose and makes for a fun second stop while I'm already down that way.

So while I won't be coming home with a bag of Happy Apple apples again this year, the fall tradition carries on, and I'll still be making the drive. 🍎🎃
