And Carol's story is exactly why Kristen's newest team member is so special.

Meet 20-year-old Alex Oliver, Carol's grandson. While most young adults his age are focused on their own path, Alex has anchored his life in honoring our seniors. He is a competitive powerlifter, but his real strength is his patience.

When Alex walks into local assisted living and memory care facilities, the room transforms. He doesn't just lead exercises; he builds connection. Residents who usually sit in isolated bubbles are suddenly laughing, passing soccer balls, and shouting out US presidents mid-workout. And when he noticed some of his seniors were more comfortable in Spanish, Alex started learning the language himself so no one in his class would ever feel left out. Even when cognitive memory struggles, he uses visual cues and gentle redirection to unlock deep muscle memory. The body responds, and the heart remembers the joy.

Together, Kristen and Alex are proving that staying strong is a shared adventure, not a solo one.

Here is what I am actually most excited about. The students from the Rocky Mountain Youth Leadership Foundation will be there Saturday night, and they will be sharing what the program has meant to them and where they are headed next. That is the part I keep thinking about. Not the plane, not the raffle.

Getting to sit across from a 16-year-old who is figuring out who he or she is going to be, and hearing them tell you about it in their own words.

Filling appetizers and drinks will be served. Doors open at 4:30pm. Engines fire at 8pm.

Before you head to the ballot box on Nov 3, it helps to know where your county leaders stand. The El Paso County Board of Commissioners just adopted an official resolution on 15 ballot measures, supporting 11 and opposing 4.

Their yes votes cover measures targeting income tax limits, fentanyl accountability and law enforcement cooperation, election integrity changes, hunting and fishing rights, and fairness in school and collegiate athletics for minors. Their no votes push back on a proposed graduated income tax that would raise the top rate to 8.4%, two measures they say would weaken TABOR refund protections, and a Front Range Passenger Rail sales tax they argue could charge El Paso County residents for a decade or more before a single train runs.

The commissioners encourage voters to read the full official ballot language and consider the fiscal and policy implications before deciding. The full resolution is available online. Full Story

This OCC First Friday Art Walk is worth your evening. On Oct 2 from 5-8pm, Cultivate Studios opens its doors at 2 South 25th St to showcase original work from five Fountain Valley School educator-artists who create on their own time, away from the classroom.

You will find live music playing as you browse, tacos from Dr Taco, and treats from Sue's Savory and Sweets. A portion of proceeds supports Food Trucks Against Homelessness, and complimentary cocktails are included. It is a full evening wrapped into one space, and it is completely free to attend.

Five teachers, one night, art and food and community all in one place. That is a First Friday worth circling.
