🚸 Safe Streets Initiative: Colorado Springs Harnesses Federal Grant for Traffic Safety

Colorado Springs is set to develop a citywide traffic safety plan, thanks to the "Safe Streets and Roads for All" grant from the US Department of Transportation. The $280,000 grant, complemented by a $70,000 city match, will support a data-driven approach to enhance intersection and roadway safety, aligning with the ConnectCOS transportation master plan. City Traffic Engineer Todd Frisbie emphasized the plan's aim to prioritize safety for all users, involving diverse stakeholders and evaluating strategies to reduce fatal and serious injury crashes.

πŸ’– Empty Stocking Fund Powers Peak Vista's Health Equity Mission

Peak Vista Community Health Center, having evolved significantly since its inception in 1971, now employs 800 full-time staff, annually serving over 81,000 patients, including 30,000 children. Lisa James, Senior Director of Philanthropy, underscores the crucial role healthcare plays, especially for vulnerable populations. During the COVID pandemic, the lower-paid workers, often unseen, played a vital role, emphasizing the importance of quality healthcare for all.

Peak Vista not only offers primary care, dental, and mental health services but also focuses on comprehensive care by ensuring communication among providers for each patient. The organization runs child-friendly waiting areas, serving over 3,600 children in 2022. With a commitment to expanding mental health services, Peak Vista aims to increase the number of mental health patients served by 118% in the next four years.

Funding from the Empty Stocking Fund (ESF) significantly impacts Peak Vista's transformative initiatives. James highlights the Compassionate Care Fund, supported by ESF, which aids patients in need of specialty care, acting as a safety net during challenging times. The ESF donations contribute to community well-being, extending healthcare accessibility and support.

🏍️ Traffic Incident: Car-Motorcycle Collision

Colorado Springs Police were investigating a car-motorcycle collision at Nevada and Mount View, north of downtown. The motorcyclist, traveling north on Nevada, collided with a left-turning vehicle heading east on Mount View around 4 p.m. on Sunday. The motorcyclist sustained serious injuries and was hospitalized. The area, closed for investigation, has now reopened. Police cite speed as a potential factor in the crash.

πŸ• Results will be posted in the upcoming Sunday issue. πŸ•
