🐾 Homeless Pets Find Hope: Free Care

Nonprofits in our area are stepping up to provide free care for pets of the homeless. From grooming services to vaccinations, organizations like Because We Choose To and Street Dog Coalition are ensuring that pets and their owners receive the support they need. Street Dog Coalition, with veterinarian volunteers, offers vaccinations, blood work, and more. These initiatives recognize the significance of pets in the lives of the homeless and aim to address their unique challenges in accessing veterinary care.

The Street Dog Coalition is scheduled to be at Springs Rescue Mission on Sunday, February 25th, offering their valuable services. Simultaneously, Because We Choose To will continue its efforts at Antlers Park on the same date, requesting men's coats to assist homeless neighbors during cold weather.

The ongoing debate over building heights in downtown Colorado Springs has reignited as residents from historic neighborhoods express concerns about potential view obstructions, particularly of Pikes Peak. The catalyst for this discussion was a proposal for a 36-story apartment building with a monthly rent of $5,241 for a two-bedroom unit. Suggestions include a 250-foot height limit, either enacted as law or as a city charter amendment requiring voter approval.

Advocates for building height limits draw parallels with cities like Washington, D.C., and Paris, which maintain strict limits to emphasize key landmarks. They argue that Pikes Peak deserves similar protection as iconic structures in other cities.

On the opposing side, proponents of increased building heights argue that denser downtown areas stimulate economic activity and create a vibrant atmosphere. They believe a cluster of high-rise structures would enhance the city's appeal, especially for high-speed corridor passenger train services.

The debate reflects a larger ongoing discussion between pro-growth expansionists and slow-growth preservationists, echoing the tension between development interests and those nostalgic for Colorado Springs' historical character.

💸 Colorado's Tax Breaks Revealed

As tax season commences, Coloradans have the chance to benefit from new tax credits. The Electric Vehicle Tax Credit, effective since January 1, allows a $5,000 credit for those who bought or leased electric vehicles with an MSRP of up to $80,000. Additionally, a $2,500 tax credit is available for EVs with an MSRP of up to $35,000. A TABOR refund, determined in a special session, provides individuals filing taxes with $800 and joint filers with $1,600. The deadline for most taxpayers to file is April 15.
