โ ๏ธ Wind Damage Causes Outages
Strong winds yesterday caused widespread power outages around Colorado Springs, affecting over 10,000 people. Skyway Elementary School in Cheyenne Mountain School District 12 had to cancel classes yesterday and today, after a power pole fell on the building, while several businesses also closed due to the outage, resulting in significant financial losses.
CO Springs Utilities crews worked tirelessly to restore power, with over 70% of affected customers seeing restoration by last night. However, repairs requiring bucket trucks are delayed due to ongoing high winds.
Residents are reminded to report downed power lines to CSU (719) 448-4800, and avoid approaching them for safety.
๐ฉโโ๏ธ National Nurses Week in El Paso County
This is National Nurses Week which celebrates the invaluable contributions of nurses, coinciding with Florence Nightingale's birthday. This year's theme, "Nurses Make the Difference", underscores their unwavering commitment and sacrifices. Nurses are encouraged to prioritize self-care and professional growth, with resources available for stress management and skill enhancement. Suggestions for celebrating include expressing gratitude through social media tributes, letters, donations, and community initiatives. The American Nurses Association offers resources and initiatives to support these efforts.
๐๏ธ Building Limits: Petition Pushes for Voter Say
A petition urging for a cap on building heights in downtown Colorado Springs is gaining traction, spearheaded by city council member Dave Donelson and community activists. Currently, there are no restrictions on building heights, but concerns have arisen over a proposed apartment complex with 36 floors reaching 400 feet. Donelson and supporters argue for preserving the city's character and focusing on mountain views rather than competing with larger cities.
The petition seeks to put the issue before voters in November, but opinions within the city council vary, with some expressing support for taller developments to address housing affordability and economic growth. A decision on whether to include the issue in the November ballot will be made by city leaders in June. Read Full Story

I-25/Fillmore crash 5/6/24 Image by KKTV
A suspect in Colorado Springs remains at large after a sequence of crashes last night around 7:45pm. Colorado State Patrol attempted to pull over the suspect's vehicle at I-25 and southbound Fillmore but were evaded. The driver continued, causing multiple collisions, before rolling their vehicle and fleeing on foot. One injured driver was hospitalized, and the suspect remains unidentified. The area was closed for investigation, with police yet to provide further details about the suspect.
