๐ฅ Wildfire Risks and Preparations: Tips from Our Fire Marshal
Colorado Springs Fire Marshal discusses wildfire risks and preparations for the upcoming fire season on the city's podcast/video. Tips include property cleanup and vigilance, as fire danger is now year-round, especially in Wildland Urban Interface areas.
๐ฃ๏ธ Renewing 2-C Tax: Mayor's Proposal
Mayor Yemi Mobolade plans to ask the Colorado Springs city council to renew the 2-C road improvement tax on November's ballot, keeping it in place for another 10 years. This tax, which funds road repairs, is set to expire in 2025. The Mayor emphasizes that the renewal won't increase the current tax rate but will maintain it at 0.57%.
The city will unveil this year's 2-C projects, addressing various problem areas, and residents can report potholes using the COS GO app, a tool even used by the Mayor's wife to fix a pothole.
๐งธ Tackling Childcare Crisis: City Summit
City leaders, business executives, and community stakeholders will gather for the inaugural Family Friendly City Summit today, organized by Pikes Peak United Way and Joint Initiatives for Youth and Family. The summit aims to tackle Colorado Springs' childcare shortage, recognizing its crucial role in the local economy.
Despite having 430 licensed childcare centers in the county, many areas still lack sufficient childcare options, leading to a workforce crisis. Notable speakers such as Mayor Yemi Mobolade and business leaders will address the challenges and explore solutions. Data reveals a significant gap between the number of children in need of childcare and the available spots, with around 16,000 additional spots required. The summit, held at Penrose House Pavilion, will discuss strategies to bridge this gap and create a more family-friendly city.
