🏙️ City Council Rejects Voter Decision on Height Limits
Colorado Springs City Council declined to proceed with a resolution that would have put the question of height limits for downtown buildings to voters in November 2024. The proposal aimed to cap building heights at the level of the Wells Fargo Building. While some residents and Councilmember Dave Donelson advocated for preserving the city's modest skyline, others, including President Pro Tem Lynette Crow-Iverson, argued that additional tall buildings would not significantly alter the downtown area. The council will instead review existing regulations and development plans internally.
🕒 El Paso County: Vote by 7 PM Today!
El Paso County residents this is your final opportunity to vote in today's primary elections by submitting ballots in person before 7pm. There are 9 polling centers open and 39 secure 24-hour mail ballot drop boxes throughout the County. Clerk and Recorder Steve Schleiker cautions common ballot errors such as multiple ballots in one envelope or submitting more than one ballot. Each voter must use their assigned envelope and sign the affidavit. Unaffiliated voters receive both party ballots but can vote on only one.
🙋♀️ Local Families Needed for Cadet Sponsorship
The U.S. Air Force Academy's Cadet Sponsor Program is in search of local families to host and mentor nearly 400 incoming cadets. This initiative offers cadets a nurturing environment outside the Academy, fostering their professional and personal development. The program matches cadets with sponsors based on common interests and values, and it is open to a wide range of community members, including military personnel and civilians. The sponsorship typically lasts all four years at the Academy, building lasting relationships and offering cadets a much-needed respite from their rigorous training. Will you be a sponsor or know anyone who might be interested?
🪓 Trivia: Rooted in History - Black Forest's Colorado Impact
American pioneers began settling in the Black Forest area in Colorado Springs, in the late 1850s. The region became a significant center for timber, which was a scarce resource at the time. The first sawmill was constructed in 1860, and by 1870, logging had reached its peak with over 700 teamsters and 1,000 lumberjacks employed.
General Palmer, the first major landowner, established the Colorado Pinery Trust in 1870, purchasing 43,000 acres. The nearby town of Eastonville, established in the early 1880s, served as a stop on the Colorado & Southern Railroad. 🚂 The timber from Black Forest was crucial in building Colorado Springs and Denver at that time.
🤔 What was the primary use of timber harvested from Black Forest in the late 19th century? |
