π« El Paso County Issues Fire Ban
With wildfires raging across Colorado and local resources strained, El Paso County has enacted Stage I fire restrictions. These include bans on open burning, fireworks, and certain outdoor activities. Officials stress community compliance to prevent severe penalties and ensure safety. As local crews assist national firefighting efforts, residents are urged to be cautious with outdoor activities. Details of the restrictions are available on the EPSO website including a color coded chart for Stage I and Stage II bans.
π Celebrate Colorado's 148th Birthday with Free Park Entry
In honor of Colorado's 148th birthday, all state parks offer free entry on Monday, August 5. The offer extends throughout August for military personnel and veterans. Meanwhile, Mayor Yemi* reflecting on the cityβs history and envisioning a future of continued growth and prosperity. Residents are encouraged to explore the state's 42 parks and reflect on the shared community spirit.
*There appears to be a discrepancy on the Mayorβs letter as it states 153rd birthday. Our calculations show 1876 to 2024 marks 148 years. We have reached out to the Mayorβs office for clarification.
π Starry Nights at Garden of the Gods
The "dog days" of summer, spanning from July 3 to August 11, derive their name from the star Sirius. Historically linked to extreme heat, this period's timing varies with geographic location and celestial shifts. This August also brings the Perseid Meteor Shower, renowned for its colorful meteors and persistent trails, reaching its peak on August 12. This meteor shower is named after the Perseus constellation due to the apparent origin of the meteors.
For a closer look, the Garden of the Gods Visitor & Nature Center will host a FREE star-gazing event on August 11, featuring telescopes, educational activities, and snacks, promising a memorable night under the stars.
