🕵️♀️ Security Shake-Up at the Citadel Mall
What will it take to make the Citadel Mall safe again? After a series of violent incidents, including shootings that have left the community shaken, Colorado Springs officials and the mall’s owners (Namdar Realty) are finally taking steps to address growing safety concerns. This meeting comes as the mall is listed as off-limits to Fort Carson soldiers in 2024, adding urgency to the matter. Plans for increased security include additional cameras, better lighting, and gates at parking lot entrances.
But why did it take so long? Some residents are wondering if the response should have come sooner. Mark your calendar: a community meeting on Sept 20, 4-6 pm at Zeal Church (in the Citadel Mall) will gather input on the mall's future. In the meantime, it's clear that the city and Namdar Realty are finally moving in the right direction. Better late than never? 🤷♀️
👥 Homeless Response Plan Sparks Debate
What will it take to solve Colorado Springs’ homelessness crisis? Residents, advocates, and city officials gathered to discuss the first draft of the city's updated Homeless Response Plan, which aims to tackle the issue through a mix of preventative measures, expanded shelter options, and affordable housing. The plan also proposes increasing outreach through the city's Homeless Outreach Team (HOT) and adding more services to assist those experiencing homelessness. But as the city moves forward, some worry about the expansion of enforcement efforts, questioning whether these tactics will address the root causes or just perpetuate the cycle.
What’s next? A full draft will be released in September, and many are hoping for long-term solutions. How will it all play out? Stay tuned. Full Story
✈️ Heavy Traffic Expected: Air Show Update
Photo by: Pikes Peak Regional Air Show
The Pikes Peak Regional Air Show will impact traffic from today through Aug 18, with Powers Blvd closures planned during specific hours. Roads near the event will face heavy traffic, and parking will be limited to ticket holders. To avoid delays, attendees are encouraged to arrive early. Colorado Springs Police will enforce strict traffic rules in the Business Park, and alternative routes are available for drivers on I-25 and surrounding roads. Despite the air show, the Colorado Springs Airport will remain open, but travelers are advised to arrive early due to expected traffic congestion. Full Traffic Schedule

🚔 Colorado Springs Gang Investigation Leads to Arrest

Following a months-long investigation into a Colorado Springs gang linked to several violent crimes, police arrested 18-year-old Josiah Olivas yesterday. Detectives had identified Olivas as possessing illegal firearms modified to fire automatically. When authorities executed a search warrant at his residence, they found two such handguns, six extended magazines, and a 100-round drum magazine designed for an AR-15 rifle. Olivas was charged with possession of dangerous weapons and violating large-capacity magazine laws. He was taken into custody, and the investigation remains active.
