🥫 Food Pantry in Crisis—Here’s How You Can Help
The Salvation Army’s food pantry in Colorado Springs is facing a critical shortage, with shelves running low on essential supplies. To meet the growing demand for the month of September, the organization has partnered with King Soopers through the Fight Hunger bag program, which donates $1 for every bag sold at the Austin Bluffs location throughout September.
The Salvation Army is urgently calling for donations of food or money to keep the pantry running, as the organization fears it will soon be unable to meet the community’s needs. Contributions can be dropped off at its Yuma Street facility or made online, where just $5 can provide a meal. The organization is also encouraging local groups to host food drives.
🚧 Why Is the City Focused on Cottonwood Creek Restoration?
The City of Colorado Springs has applied for FEMA funding to support a vital restoration and stabilization project along Cottonwood Creek, west of Powers. The project aims to secure critical infrastructure, such as electric lines and water mains, by stabilizing the creek’s banks with bioengineering techniques. These efforts would not only reduce flood risks but also restore approximately 3,000 feet of streambank using natural methods like willow plantings. The project will comply with federal and local environmental regulations, with an anticipated long-term positive impact on the area’s floodplain and wetlands. Minor disruptions are expected during construction. Public feedback on the proposal is open for 15 days following this announcement.
🏘️ Church Builds Affordable Housing Complex
Solid Rock Christian Center has opened The Villages at Solid Rock, a 77-unit affordable housing complex in southeast Colorado Springs. The complex, built with state tax credits, offers rent based on income, providing relief to residents facing rising housing costs. A three-bedroom unit is priced around $1,000, considerably lower than the city’s average rent of over $1,800.
The development comes at a critical time as Colorado Springs grapples with a housing shortage, with 27,000 units still needed to meet demand. Mayor Yemi has emphasized affordable housing as a priority, with $1.6 million allocated this year to local projects. The Villages at Solid Rock has units are full, and prospective tenants can join the waitlist.
