๐ Prop 129: Lower Vet Bills or Riskier Care?
Colorado voters will soon weigh in on Proposition 129, which seeks to establish a new position in veterinary care: Veterinary Professional Associates (VPAs). These mid-level professionals would help manage tasks currently handled by veterinarians, potentially easing workloads and reducing costs for pet owners.
Supporters claim that a care shortage, exacerbated by the pandemic, is leaving many animals without timely treatment. Opponents counter that the shortage has largely subsided, and they worry that VPAs, unlike physician assistants in human medicine, would be permitted to perform surgeries without the depth of training required for veterinarians. If the proposition passes, VPAs could enter the workforce as early as 2027, though critics argue that the new role could ultimately increase vet bills rather than lower them. Full Story
๐ต Want to Make a Difference for Seniors?
The El Paso County Board of Commissioners is seeking volunteers for the Pikes Peak Area Agency on Aging. This organization provides critical programs for older adults and caregivers in El Paso, Park, and Teller counties. Its primary goal is to enable those aged 60 and older to live independently, with services funded by the Older Americans Act and the State of Colorado.
Volunteers on this committee will help shape advocacy and policy recommendations aimed at maintaining the independence of older adults. The group meets monthly to discuss relevant issues, and applications for the open position are due by Nov 1, 2024. Applicants can submit their materials via mail, email, or fax. ๐ Ready for Halloween Magic at the Zoo?
Cheyenne Mountain Zooโs "Boo at the Zoo" returns for another year of Halloween fun, combining festive activities with support for conservation. The event features a haunted house, trick-or-treat stations, giraffe feeding, and more, providing a family-friendly evening on the mountain. The zoo, which operates without tax support, uses the event as a major fundraiser, with a portion of each ticket sale going toward wildlife conservation efforts.
"Boo at the Zoo" runs on select evenings, including Halloween night, and tickets must be purchased online in advance.
