🐴 Mounted Unit Mourns Beloved Partner

Mounted Unit Mourns Zulu

Courtesy of the El Paso County Sheriff's Office

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office is grieving the loss of Zulu, a cherished horse who served the Mounted Unit for nearly a decade. Zulu, was an integral part of many high-profile events, including parades, presidential details, and search operations, such as the Gannon Stauch case.

After developing severe colic, Zulu was rushed to a veterinary hospital, but despite several efforts to save him, the decision was made to humanely euthanize him to relieve his suffering. His passing leaves a noticeable void in the department, which now remains the only mounted unit in the Pikes Peak region.

🏙️ Will the 2025 Budget Reflect Your Priorities?

Budget Town Hall Meeting - 10/21/2024

As Colorado Springs works to finalize its 2025 budget, community members voiced their concerns last night during a public meeting, advocating for key areas to receive more funding. The $440 million budget, which has grown by $7 million from last year, allocates funds to the Colorado Springs Police and Fire Departments, but many residents expressed a need for more investment in public restrooms, parks, and transportation. However, the majority focused on addressing the city’s homeless crisis, urging the council to increase resources for shelter, services, and winter survival efforts. The City Council is expected to finalize the budget by November 26.

🧩Trivia: Guess This Peanuts History Tied to Colorado Springs

Charles Schulz, Joyce and Meredith in 1951

In 1951, Charles Schulz, the legendary creator of Peanuts, found himself enchanted by Colorado Springs during his honeymoon with his new wife, Joyce. The couple loved the area so much they decided to briefly make it their home, moving into a modest house at 2321 North El Paso St. As Schulz worked on his then-fledgling comic strip Peanuts, he faced the challenges of balancing a new family life and comic deadlines. Schulz soon rented a small office downtown, where the iconic strip would start taking shape.

During this time, Schulz had a chance encounter that would influence his work. While walking downtown, he ran into Philip "Fritz" Van Pelt, a fellow WWII veteran from his time in the Twentieth Armored Infantry Division. Although they hadn't known each other during the war, they quickly became friends, often playing bridge together with their wives. Schulz eventually honored his friend by incorporating the surname “Van Pelt” for two of his most iconic characters.

Though Schulz’s time in Colorado Springs was brief (moving his growing family back to Minnesota in 1952), its impact on local Peanuts enthusiasts is undeniable. *Source

🚨 Hit-and-Run Near Garden of the Gods

CSPD

CSPD is searching for a driver who crashed into a marked police cruiser on Sunday night and left the scene. The cruiser, parked on the corner of Garden of the Gods and Mark Dabling, was there in response to an earlier accident, with its lights on and traffic cones set up to protect the area.

A pickup truck drove through the cones and hit the cruiser, then continued westbound without stopping. Fortunately, no officers were inside, and the cruiser suffered only minor damage. As of Monday, the driver remained unidentified. Full Story
