🎹 Sarah Kurtz's Story: From YMCA Keys to Colorado Springs' Musical Revolution
Ever catch yourself singing in the shower or wishing you could play along with your favorite songs? That inner musician lives in all of us. Some dream of finally learning piano, while others hear old lesson books calling from dusty shelves, wondering if it's time to try again.
Sarah Kurtz, founder of Home Musicology, understands this pull toward music. In a family without musical roots, she was the determined second-grader who begged for piano lessons. Starting at the YMCA, even without a piano at home, she practiced whenever she could, driven by an inexplicable love for music. That early passion blossomed into a lifelong journey—years of lessons, church performances, accompanying singers, and sharing her gift through teaching.
Reminiscent of the dedication seen in Mr. Holland’s Opus, Sarah’s mission is to help others discover their own musical journey. Now, she and her team of instructors bring that devotedness and joy into homes across the Pikes Peak region. They transform living rooms into personal music studios for piano, guitar, drums, voice lessons, and more. Each teacher shares Sarah's belief that music isn't just about learning notes—it's about discovering a voice you never knew you had.
Recently, watching her students perform at Bonaventure Assisted Living, Sarah saw her own childhood joy reflected in their faces—the pure delight of creating something beautiful through music. It's never too late to start that journey or to return to it. Also makes perfect holiday gifts!
Ready to unleash your inner musician? Home Musicology is offering our readers half-price on your first lesson to help you take that first step. Just mention this article when scheduling!

🧸 Help Spread Holiday Joy—Here’s How
The United Way’s “Adopt-a-Family” program offers an opportunity to brighten the holiday season for over 200 local families in need. The organization is looking for more donors to fulfill holiday wish lists, which can include anything from essentials like clothing to fun holiday treats and toys. Each family’s requests are unique, helping ensure they receive exactly what they need.
The deadline to adopt a family is December 6, with gift drop-off scheduled for December 10 and 11. This is a meaningful way to bring joy to neighbors in need, and every little bit helps. Click for details

📈 Approved: What CSU’s Rate Hikes Mean for You
It’s happening…Colorado Springs Utilities customers can expect higher monthly bills starting in 2025. Yesterday, city officials approved a five-year rate increase plan to fund necessary improvements across water, wastewater, electricity, and gas services. By 2029, average monthly utility costs are projected to rise by roughly $80 compared to today, driven by community growth, service reliability demands, and clean energy goals.
Alongside these increases, a new time-of-day electricity rate will take effect in Oct 2025, letting customers choose between higher rates during peak hours or a flat rate. While these changes bring added costs, officials emphasize that these investments are essential for the city’s infrastructure and environmental goals. Full Story

🛰️ Space Command Debate Heats Up Again
According to multiple sources, the location of U.S. Space Command headquarters is again up for debate. Though headquartered in Colorado Springs since 2019, Alabama officials are optimistic the Command may relocate to Huntsville, Alabama, under the incoming Trump administration.
Meanwhile, Colorado leaders, including Mayor Yemi and Senator Michael Bennet, assert that Colorado Springs, with its strong defense support and resources, is the ideal place for Space Command to thrive. As both states make their case, the decision could impact thousands of military personnel and local communities. For now, the military community in Colorado remains hopeful for continuity, while Alabama looks forward to potentially welcoming Space Command. President-elect Trump has yet to weigh in directly. We will have to wait and see. We’ll update when more information is available…which may not be until January.
Will you do us a favor and spread the word? We have a goal to add another 500 435 subscribers by Thanksgiving but we need YOUR HELP to get there!
