📚 Rockrimmon Library Decision Stuns Again
UPDATE 12/8/24: In yet another twist, community members filed a lawsuit to keep the library open. We will share more info as it unfolds. Right now there isn’t enough info to report just yet.
************
This should be the last report on this topic…after 2 hours of deliberation, the Pikes Peak Library District Board has reaffirmed its decision not to extend the lease for the Rockrimmon Library, despite widespread community support and fundraising efforts. The library, which closed earlier this week, faced closure due to financial challenges outlined in an independent budget report.
The “Save Rockrimmon Library” organization raised over $71K in hopes of offsetting costs, but the board maintained that the closure was necessary to address district-wide financial concerns. While board members expressed a commitment to revisit the idea of a library in the area when funds allow, this decision leaves Rockrimmon without a library for now. The outcome has left community frustrated and seeking alternatives to ensure access to library services in the region. Full Story

🚪 Silver Key Opens Doors - ADA Adaptable
Silver Key Apartments, a new affordable housing complex for seniors, has officially opened on S Murray. Designed for residents aged 62 and older, the 50-units includes 13 units specifically for veterans. With features like ADA-adaptable kitchens, bathrooms, and elevator access, the apartments prioritize accessibility and comfort.
Residents must meet income criteria, earning 30 to 60 percent of the area median income. This is Silver Key’s second major housing project aimed at addressing the growing need for affordable housing as Colorado’s senior population continues to rise.
For many seniors, these apartments offer relief from financial stress, stable rents, and thoughtfully designed spaces, making them a much-needed solution in a challenging housing market.
👶 New Child Safety Laws Take Effect Soon
In a significant move to enhance child passenger safety, Colorado’s updated child restraint laws take effect on Jan 1, 2025. The changes reflect current best practices, requiring booster seats until age 9, rear-facing car seats for children under 2 years old who weigh less than 40 pounds, and proper restraints for all passengers under 18.
Motor vehicle crashes remain a top cause of death for children, and last year, over 78% of car seats inspected in Colorado were found to be improperly used or installed. To combat this, free car seat inspections are available through certified technicians, with resources and low-cost car seats offered by organizations like WeeCycle.
Families can learn more about the updated laws, ensure their car seats meet safety standards, and access helpful resources at CarSeatsColorado.com. These changes are designed to keep children safer and give caregivers the tools they need to protect their little ones.
