🚧 Traffic Shifts on Circle Drive This Week
If Circle Drive is part of your daily route, expect some changes this week. The city is shifting traffic onto the newly completed eastbound bridge near I-25 as part of the Circle Drive bridge replacement project. With construction in full swing, delays are likely throughout the week, so commuters should plan for extra time.
The project addresses the need to replace aging bridges built in the 1960s, which are reaching the end of their lifespan. After traffic moves to the new bridge, crews will demolish the old westbound bridge and begin building a replacement. The final phase—replacing the eastbound bridge—will happen later next year.
Call 719-675-0464 to order your holiday dinner rolls, breads, cinnamon rolls, and pies! FREE cinnamon roll with any pie order! Deadline: THIS FRI, Dec 20. Pick up on Dec 23 |
🍕 Pay It Forward: How One Local Restaurant Is Making A Difference
Courtesy of KOAA
This is a feel-good story we just had to share! It reminds us how much good can come from looking out for one another—especially during the holidays.
Monument Pies and Grinders is spreading holiday cheer with a simple yet powerful idea: letting customers pay for meals in advance for those in need. This pay-it-forward system, which has been quietly helping the community for years, is a beautiful example of how small acts of kindness can make a big impact. By offering a visible way to give and allowing anyone struggling to pick up a meal, no questions asked, the restaurant has created a model of generosity that inspires others to join in. Full Story
🎨 Funding Pulled—Can Mobile Arts Keep Going?
Courtesy of Colorado Springs Independent
For the past three years, Colorado College’s Mobile Arts Program has transformed a Ford truck into a vibrant hub of creativity, offering free concerts, art workshops, and dance events to neighborhoods, food drives, and local gatherings across Colorado Springs. Launched during the pandemic to make art more accessible, the program broke barriers, bringing art directly to the community and fostering connections among diverse groups, including young artists and adults with disabilities.
Now, with Colorado College pulling its funding due to financial constraints, the program’s future is uncertain. Organizers are scrambling to secure grants and donations to keep the truck rolling—even if it means breaking away from the college. While its fate hangs in the balance, Mobile Arts has already left a legacy of joy and creativity, reminding us that art belongs everywhere and to everyone. Full Story
🌾 TRIVIA: Surprising Ways Pioneer Women Adapted to the West
True or False: A pioneer woman's daily dress was often shorter than her Sunday best.*
Pioneer women in Colorado Springs played a crucial role in the success of frontier settlements, adapting their clothing to meet the demands of their new lifestyle. Unlike their eastern counterparts, these women participated in tasks necessary for establishing and maintaining homes and farms, including cooking, cleaning, caring for children, doing laundry, and even working in the fields.
To accommodate their active lifestyle, women modified their clothing. Skirts were hemmed three inches shorter for day-to-day dresses, making it easier to move from task to task. Some even had weights sewn into the hem to prevent improper exposure on windy days.
Calico was the fabric of choice for frontier clothing. It's a type of plain-woven cotton fabric, typically unbleached and undyed, known for its natural off-white color and lightweight, breathable nature. Calico was ideal for the frontier as it was light, sturdy, and easy to clean.
For winter months, women likely layered their clothing for warmth, typically multiple petticoats. They also used heavier fabrics like flannel for undergarments to protect against the brutal Colorado winters.
*Answer: True - hems were raised for practical reasons
