El Paso County Public Health is encouraging residents to test their homes for radon this winter. Radon is a radioactive gas and the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S., responsible for hundreds of deaths annually in Colorado. Nearly 50% of Colorado homes have unsafe radon levels, and El Paso County is a high-risk area. 

Because radon is odorless and invisible, testing is the only way to detect it. Kits are affordable, and programs are available to reduce testing and mitigation costs for low-income households. Colorado Springs Utilities is advancing key energy projects to provide reliable and cost-effective power while supporting the city’s transition to sustainable energy. A new battery storage system, expected to launch in 2025, will store energy for peak usage, improving efficiency and reducing carbon emissions.

Springs Utilities is also investing in new natural gas pipeline capacity to meet growing demands and reinforce the local electric grid. These upgrades align with state energy mandates and ensure our community has a secure energy future. Crossroads Animal Hospital on Austin Bluffs and Academy, is dealing with the impacts of homelessness on their property, a situation that intensified after nearby fencing redirected unhoused individuals to the area. Despite city efforts, problems persist. Staff members face challenges ranging from makeshift fire pits to security incidents, creating a sense of unease. 

Dr. Hyden, the medical director, sympathizes with the homeless individuals’ struggles, especially as temperatures drop, but calls for stronger measures to address the situation and protect his staff and business. The hospital continues to work with local authorities, but sadly enforcement and long-term solutions remain elusive. Full Story
