🥶 Winter Alerts You’ll See This Weekend
The National Weather Service has simplified winter weather alerts to make cold risks clearer. Wind chill advisories are now replaced with "extreme cold alerts" and "cold weather advisories," which account for dangerous temperatures with or without wind.
This weekend, Colorado Springs could see temperatures drop to -13°F, with apparent temperatures dipping into the negative 20s, making frostbite and hypothermia a serious concern. If temperatures feel like -25°F or colder, an extreme cold alert will be issued.
Later this year, hard freeze alerts will be folded into general freeze warnings. Prepare to keep loved ones and pets safe and protect your home from freezing pipes during this weekend’s Arctic chill. Full Story
🚫 A Food Dye Decades in the Making—Banned!
Red dye No. 3, a synthetic color additive linked to cancer in animals, is finally being banned in US foods, beverages, and medications after decades of use. This FDA decision follows years of advocacy and aligns with stricter European standards.
Food manufacturers must phase out the dye by 2027, though some companies have already stopped using it. If you’re concerned about exposure in the meantime, check labels for “FD&C Red #3” or “Red 3.” This milestone reflects growing efforts to prioritize public health over outdated practices in the food and drug industries. 🛑 $1.8M Sign Project to Boost Road Safety
CDOT is set to replace outdated road signs on highways across El Paso and Teller Counties, including areas near Fountain, Colorado Springs, Woodland Park, and Palmer Lake. This $1.8 million effort, started this month, will enhance safety and visibility for drivers.
Construction will take place weekdays from 7am to 5pm, with impacts such as lane and shoulder closures. Fines will double in work zones, so drivers should plan extra time for travel and exercise caution if in the work zone areas. The project is scheduled to wrap up by June 2025.
