π Simple Gift, Big Impact for Students

The Scripps Howard Fundβs annual "If You Give a Child a Book" campaign is underway, bringing free books to students at six Title I schools in Colorado Springs. Targeting kindergarten through third grade, the program aims to inspire young readers and provide 10 books per child annually to encourage literacy at home.
Volunteers, including members of KOAA News5, will also read with students, fostering a sense of community. By focusing on schools with limited resources, this initiative continues to make a lasting impact on childhood education and reading access. Full Story
π A Tip, a K9, and a Shocking Discovery
Colorado Springs police made a significant drug seizure on I-25 over the weekend, recovering more than 100 pounds of methamphetamine during a traffic stop. The bust followed a tip-off about a vehicle carrying a large amount of the substance into the area. With the help of narcotics K9 Nyx, officers discovered three bins, two of which contained the drugs.
This successful operation highlights the diligent efforts of CSPD to safeguard the community and combat illegal drug activity. Investigators are continuing their work on the case. Full Story

π οΈ Thawing Frozen Pipes? Avoid This Costly Mistake
As temperatures rise after a deep freeze, frozen pipes can become a serious issue, potentially leading to costly bursts. Local plumbers recommend shutting off your water immediately if pipes freeze, then contacting a plumber or your property manager. While waiting, use towels, fans, or a wet vac to manage any leaks. Avoid using direct heat on frozen pipes, as it can cause older materials like plastic or copper to crack.
Staying home after a freeze is crucial for spotting any issues early. If pipes burst, be sure to photograph the damage for insurance purposes. Taking these steps can save you time, money, and stress. Full Story

π Local Hero Makes Shocking Promise On Mountain's Edge
Ever wonder who'd risk everything to help a stranger on an icy mountain ledge? Meet Barrington the owner of Green & Growing LLC, who recently faced a heart-stopping rescue in our deep freeze, when a local resident's car hung precariously over a 50-foot drop. While other services turned away, Barrington promised the stranded driver, "I'll sacrifice my truck and myself before I let you go over that edge."
Crazy? Maybe. But after a nerve-wracking three-minute reverse down the mountain, both made it to safety β proving that in Colorado Springs, we've got neighbors with courage bigger than our mountains.
