🚧 Another Water Main = Temporary Road Closure

According to Colorado Springs Utilities, the intersection of Wooten and Galley is closed in all directions for essential water main installation. The closure will last until Tues, Jan 28, at 10 am, with detours in place to help drivers navigate the area.

This project is part of ongoing infrastructure improvements aimed at enhancing water services. Work will move east toward Powers once this intersection is complete.

🐘 CMZoo Animal Rights Debate Hits Colorado Courts

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo

The Colorado Supreme Court ruled that five elephants at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo cannot legally challenge their captivity because they are not considered persons under the law. The case, brought by an animal rights group, argued that the elephants—Missy, Kimba, Lucky, LouLou, and Jambo—suffer mentally and physically in captivity and should be moved to a sanctuary.

The zoo maintained that relocation would be harmful to the elephants due to their age and social habits. This ruling mirrors a similar decision in New York involving another elephant named Happy. The legal battle highlights the growing conversation around animal rights and whether they should extend to nonhuman creatures.

💸 Why Colorado Springs Roads Cost Us

COS pothole

A report by TRIP reveals that Colorado Springs drivers are spending an average of $2,610 annually due to vehicle repairs caused by poor road conditions, with 28% of roads rated poor and 46% fair. A $350 million statewide funding shortfall hampers maintenance efforts. Residents have expressed concerns about road quality, citing the financial impact, although some recognize improvements in recent years.

The City of Colorado Springs highlighted its proactive infrastructure investments, including the Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority and renewed 2C program, as well as bridge upgrades. While local efforts aim to address these challenges, regional and state-level funding remain obstacles. Full Story
