🎬 TRIVIA: Theater's Hidden Civil Rights Battle
Pikes Peak Ave 1939
Did you know that Colorado Springs once boasted a movie theater with stunning Native American-inspired decor? The Ute Theatre, opened in 1935, was one of the city's most ornate cinemas during the golden age of Hollywood.
Q: What famous artist was commissioned to create massive murals for the Ute Theatre?
Built on the site of the old Rialto Theatre, the Ute featured ornate decorations inspired by authentic Native American designs. Owner Joseph Cooper sent architects and designers throughout the Southwest to gather ideas. The result was a theater adorned with highly stylized and colorful sconces, banisters, and tables.
The Ute Theatre also played a role in the civil rights movement. In 1944, Juanita Hairston sued the theater for racial discrimination after being forcibly removed from her seat, leading to a landmark legal case.
