🏡 Is Your Neighborhood Firewise Yet?

With wildfires becoming more frequent, communities in El Paso and Teller counties are stepping up through Firewise USA, a program that helps neighborhoods commit to wildfire mitigation efforts. More than 50 local communities are already participating, but many households are still unprepared.
One key step is signing up for Peak Alerts, an emergency notification system for wildfire evacuations. Right now, only 26% of households are enrolled, leaving many at risk of missing critical warnings. If your community isn’t Firewise yet, or if you haven’t signed up for Peak Alerts, now is the time to take action. Full Story & list of neighborhoods with Firewise designation

👂 50 Million Americans Have This—Do You?

Tinnitus, a condition affecting over 50 million Americans, causes ringing, buzzing, or even music in the ears without an external source. Often linked to hearing loss, ear injuries, or circulation issues, it can range from mild to debilitating.
While there’s no cure, treatment focuses on retraining the brain to ignore the sound, often through sound therapy, hearing aids, or stress management. If tinnitus has been interfering with daily life, exploring treatment options could make a difference. Full Story
🤔 Local Nonprofits Brace for Changes

With federal funding uncertain, local nonprofits are taking proactive steps to secure their future. Silver Key, which provides vital services for seniors, is leaning on volunteers and grants to keep programs running. Meanwhile, Pikes Peak Habitat for Humanity, though not currently receiving federal dollars, is navigating rising costs that could impact future home builds. Both organizations emphasize that while services remain steady for now, ongoing community support will be crucial in ensuring their long-term success. Full Story

🥨 Whole Grain Soft Pretzel Bites

Recipe by Forks Over Knives
Pretzel bites may just be one of the fastest, easiest yeast-bread projects around. First you make the yeast dough and let it rise. Then you shape the dough into ropes and cut them into bite-size pieces—no tricky twisting needed.

🥾 Hidden History in Austin Bluffs Open Space

Austin Bluffs Open Space
If you want to venture out this weekend, here’s another place to explore outdoors. Austin Bluffs Open Space spans 584 acres and is a geological treasure with rock formations as old as the Rocky Mountains’ rise, about 66 million years ago. Pulpit Rock, a highlight of the area, is composed of sandstone and mudstone, bearing witness to the region’s dynamic geological past. This land, once ancestral territory of the Cheyenne, Ute, and Lipan Apache peoples, now includes University Park Open Space, Pulpit Rock Park, and Austin Bluffs Park.
