🚵‍♀️ More Adventure Coming to Pikes Peak

“Pikes Peak Recreation Area”

Pikes Peak could see expanded outdoor recreation opportunities under a new proposal led by Governor Polis and CPW (Colorado Parks and Wildlife.) The idea is to establish a “Pikes Peak Recreation Area” that enhances hiking, camping, and fishing while keeping management decisions local. Multiple city, county, and federal partners are backing the effort, which aligns with Colorado’s broader goal of improving outdoor access.

One major focus is completing the Ring the Peak Trail, a long-awaited project that would allow hikers to traverse the entire mountain. If approved, CPW would oversee recreation in a way similar to its role in the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area, ensuring responsible stewardship while boosting tourism and local enjoyment. Now, the next step is drafting a long-term agreement to make these plans a reality.

🦥 The Cutest Baby Sloth Now Has a Name

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo’s baby sloth

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo’s baby sloth officially has a name! After a public vote, Olive won in a landslide, earning three times as many votes as runner-up Jade, with Emerald and Forrest coming in 3rd and 4th.

Born in Dec to mom Aysan, Olive has been melting hearts since her Jan debut. The green-inspired name follows the theme set by her big sister, Bean, and is a nod to the lush rainforest habitat sloths call home. Thanks to the community’s enthusiastic participation, this little one now has a name to match her charm!

Alice Bemis Taylor, a visionary female philanthropist helped shape Colorado Springs

Did you know that Alice Bemis Taylor, a visionary female philanthropist helped shape Colorado Springs’ cultural and social history by championing women and children? She left an indelible mark on the city through impactful institutions still thriving today.

Which Colorado Springs institution did this influential woman found to honor her late mother?

This remarkable woman’s impact on Colorado Springs is immeasurable. She endowed and directed the construction of a nursery in 1922 (now the Child Nursery Centers), providing essential childcare services for working mothers. She also significantly influenced local architecture by commissioning premier southwestern architect to design the Fine Arts Center (FAC), a building that would house her impressive collections of Indian crafts and Hispanic collection.

Beyond buildings, she financed social welfare organizations, scholarships, and aid to individuals. Her foundation exceeded all donations to the Community Chest and helped fund the Rock Ledge Ranch Living History Site.

Answer: The Colorado Springs Day Nursery, created to honor her late mother, Alice Cogswell Bemis, providing a beautiful and inspirational space for children of working, tubercular mothers. *Source
