🐧 Why This Baby Penguin Matters So Much

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is celebrating the arrival of a new African penguin chick, hatched in early April and already growing quickly under expert care. This tiny newcomer is more than just cute — it symbolizes a major conservation effort for a species now considered critically endangered, with fewer than 10,000 wild breeding pairs remaining.

The zoo plays a vital role in global programs aimed at protecting African penguins, and every guest visit helps support those efforts. Keep your ears open at the penguin habitat — you might just hear the chick before you see it.

🚧 Why Your Drive Through S Nevada Still Feels Bumpy

repaving of S Nevada and north Hwy 115

The long-awaited repaving of S Nevada and north Hwy 115 hasn’t kicked off yet because CDOT crews are still focused on necessary prep work, including repairing curbs, sidewalks, and medians — especially near Brookside St and the Cheyenne Rd/Hwy 115 area. This phase is vital to ensure the new pavement lasts. Once it’s done, milling and paving will begin outside Fort Carson and head north before switching directions.

CDOT is aiming for a late September finish for this $10.5 million project, the first major overhaul in nearly three decades. Full Story

🐝 What If You Didn't Mow the Lawn?

No Mow May

Communities nationwide, even Colorado Springs, are joining the “No Mow May” movement, encouraging homeowners to skip or reduce mowing during May to support pollinators like bees and butterflies, which rely on early-season blooms for food and habitat. Even a small patch of unmowed lawn or a less frequent mowing routine can help.

The movement also benefits birds, soil health, and water conservation. Bee City USA offers signs and tips to make participating easy and neighbor-friendly. It’s a simple, impactful way to turn your yard into a haven for local wildlife — and take a break from mowing, too. Full Story
