🚧 Flood Zone Neighbors Are Holding Their Breath

Ongoing rain has Colorado Springs residents in flood-prone neighborhoods on edge, especially near Siferd Blvd, where a major city drainage project is underway. Once a through-street, Siferd is being turned into a cul-de-sac with enhanced stormwater systems to prevent future flooding.
Meanwhile, homeowners on Jetwing Dr, still wary from past flood damage, are preparing for more wet weather. City officials are asking drivers to avoid flooded roads, stay safe, and report issues using the GOCOS app. Full Story

🧴 What You Can Dump—For Free—in COS

Illegal dumping across El Paso County is becoming a serious issue, with everything from chemicals to electronics showing up in open spaces. But many people don’t realize the county runs a free hazardous waste facility where residents can safely dispose of dangerous materials.
In 2024 alone, the site has helped keep tens of thousands of gallons of paint, oil, and flammables out of landfills and local groundwater. It’s a year-round resource, though some items may need an appointment, and it’s all part of keeping our neighborhoods clean and safe. Full Story
🧬 What These Local Students Are Learning Is Wild

In an exciting leap for local education, Pikes Peak State College is now home to a pioneering gene editing program thanks to a $1.5 million grant from the National Science Foundation. Through a partnership with UCCS, students—many of whom wouldn’t otherwise access this kind of opportunity—are now getting hands-on experience with CRISPR, a powerful genetic technology that holds promise for curing diseases like cancer and sickle cell anemia.
The grant also funds workshops to train faculty across the Midwest, positioning PPSC as a regional leader in cutting-edge molecular science—all from right here in Colorado Springs! Full Story

👓TRIVIA: How Does A Pair Of Glasses Spark Hope In Colorado Springs?
Did you know the Lions Club has been a driving force for vision health in Colorado Springs for decades?
Globally known for their commitment to “preserving the precious gift of sight,” the Lions have made a local impact by collecting thousands of used eyeglasses at vision centers across Colorado Springs. These glasses are cleaned, sorted, and matched to people in need through the Colorado Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center, giving the gift of clear vision to those who can’t afford it-locally and around the world.
What local program, supported by the Lions Club, offers free vision screenings to children in Colorado Springs, helping detect and prevent eye problems early?
If you have old eye glasses collecting dust, make sure you find Lion’s drop-off site and please donate them!

Answer: Colorado Lions’ KidSight: provides free vision screenings for children, helping catch issues like amblyopia early and ensuring kids in our community don’t fall behind due to undiagnosed vision problems. The Lions’ hands-on approach means that, with just a few minutes of training, volunteers can help screen a child’s vision and change their future. *Source
