🔥 Smoke Near Pikes Peak Today

A 250-acre prescribed burn is happening today near Crystal Creek Reservoir on the north side of Pikes Peak, close to Green Mountain Falls. If you spot smoke while looking toward the mountain, it’s part of a controlled effort by the U.S. Forest Service to manage forest health and reduce wildfire risks.
Hikers planning to visit this area today may want to choose another trail until the work is complete. Officials are monitoring the weather to ensure the burn remains safe and effective. Full Story
🥩 Health Inspectors Found These Surprises

Recent health inspections revealed challenges for several well-known Colorado Springs steakhouses, including Cowboy Star, Prime25 and Texas Roadhouse, with violations ranging from handwashing lapses to improper food storage. While Cowboy Star and Prime25 passed their follow-up inspections, Texas Roadhouse and King Buffet are still working to address concerns.
Meanwhile, several local favorites like Dion’s Pizza and Iron Springs Chateau scored very high or perfect marks. These inspections are a crucial reminder that food safety is an ongoing priority for our community’s dining spots.
Health inspection results across El Paso County are available online for those wanting to check their favorite spots. Full Story

🥾 A Trail, A Tunnel, and a Waterfall!
If you're looking for a peaceful escape close to home, St. Mary’s Falls delivers a scenic 6.2-mile out-and-back, trail with a waterfall payoff at the end. Starting from Lower Gold Camp Road near Helen Hunt Falls, the hike takes you past a granite tunnel and into forested paths that follow a creek.
The steady climb is moderate and manageable for most hikers, with the reward of cool mist, mountain air, and a quiet place to pause at the falls. It’s best hiked between late spring and fall—and early mornings are key to beating the crowds and catching the best light. Click for details and recent pics from Heath who was here this week.
