🚧 Rain, Roads & Reschedules

If you've been heading to or from the Colorado Springs Airport, you may have noticed some fresh asphalt under your tires. CDOT crews kicked off a major overnight paving project at Powers and Milton E. Proby Pkwy this week, and even though the rain made a late entrance Sunday, the work got underway with only a short delay. The goal? Smoother, safer roads for drivers in and out of the airport.
Meanwhile, a separate repaving effort just south of Black Forest on Glider Loop got completely rained out and has been postponed. With more wet weather in the forecast, the timeline for that rural road may continue to shift. Full Story

🧒 Can One Book Really Change a Life in COS?

The “If You Give a Child a Book” campaign is back this week, and it’s such a simple but powerful way to help our local children. For just $6, you can provide a brand-new book to an underserved elementary student in one of five local Title 1 elementary schools—including (but not limited to) Queen Palmer, West, and Will Rogers. These books are chosen by the kids themselves and help build home libraries that reflect diverse cultures, abilities, and experiences.
Third-grade reading levels are a major predictor of future success, and this effort helps bridge a gap that too many families face. Last year’s campaign raised over $61,000 and gave away more than 12,000 books. It's a small gesture with lasting impact. Full Story
🎨 $2,500 Prize for Local Artists

If you’re an artist with a passion for live music and Colorado vibes, this is your chance to shine. The Ford Amphitheater is looking for bold, original artwork that captures the thrill of live performance and the connection between the stage and the audience. You don’t need to be a muralist—just submit your design in a square format, and if selected, it’ll be professionally reproduced as a large-scale mural inside the venue. Two winners will each receive $2,500 and have their work unveiled in a special ceremony. Artists from all styles and disciplines are welcome, but the deadline is Sept 24, so don’t wait!

🎪 TRIVIA: The Untold Story of How Community Spirit Built Colorado’s Fair Legacy!

Colorado State Fair Parade North Main Street, Pueblo circa 1900
Did you know the Colorado State Fair began in 1872 as a grassroots celebration—created by locals who wanted to spotlight Colorado’s abundant harvests and growing communities? It all started in Pueblo, where neighbors came together in makeshift venues and open fields to share pride in their crops, livestock, and crafts. Over the years, the fairgrounds transformed from dusty lots to a lively 102-acre campus filled with dazzling pavilions, family traditions, and memories that stretch back generations.
Which came first: the Colorado State Fair or the State of Colorado itself?

What makes the Colorado State Fair truly special isn’t just its age or location—it’s the heart and soul behind it. Families return year after year for the rodeo thrills, the creative arts competitions, and that magic sense of belonging you only feel at a fair where your grandparents might have once shown a prize-winning animal. As the event grew, each new era brought more color, excitement, and community spirit—from the Mexican Pavilion’s civic importance to the modern blend of concerts, parades, and deep-fried treats.

The Colorado State Fair remains a lovingly handed-down tradition—a place where Colorado’s story is celebrated by everyone who walks through its gates.
Answer: The Colorado State Fair - The very first Colorado State Fair was held in October 1872—four years before Colorado achieved statehood in 1876. *Source
