🎈 Labor Day: What’s Open & Closed in COS

Just so you know…on Monday, Sept. 1, in observance of Labor Day, most City of Colorado Springs and El Paso County administrative offices will be closed, including courts, libraries, and community centers.

Other closures are post offices, libraries, UPS/FedEx and even Costco.

However, several outdoor attractions will remain open, such as Garden of the Gods, Pikes Peak, and city golf courses. It’s also the last day of the season for local splash pads and fountains (wow, the season sure did fly by. Seems like they just opened.)

One of the biggest weekend highlights is the 49th annual Labor Day Lift Off* at Memorial Park, offering breathtaking hot air balloon views. Residents are encouraged to check event details and arrive early, as large crowds are expected. *May be affected by weather Sat & Sun

πŸš™ Labor Day Weekend Traffic Alert

With summer coming to a close, CDOT is reminding drivers that Labor Day weekend will bring heavier-than-usual traffic, especially on I-70 west of Denver. Construction projects will pause starting today at noon to ease delays, but travel peaks are expected Friday through Monday. The Eisenhower Tunnel could see nearly 190,000 vehicles pass through again this year.

Travelers can check COtrip.org or use CDOT’s apps for real-time updates. Public transit options are available, and safety patrols will be on duty to assist along major corridors. Drive safe, plan ahead, and maybe skip the jam with a shuttle ride instead.

πŸ₯‡ Which Restaurants Restaurants Scored Bigβ€”And Failed

As we reported last week, a familiar name is back on the failing list. Camin Thai Cuisine on N Academy has once again failed a health inspection last weekβ€”this time with live and dead roaches found near the cook line, personal items stored improperly, and dripping condensation in food containers. Despite not being forced to close, the restaurant voluntarily shut its doors and awaits another re-inspection. Full Story

Several other local spots also fell short, while others earned high praise for their cleanliness and kitchen practices. Here's a quick glance:

❌ Other Recently Failed Inspections

  • Dragon King – 6867 Mesa Ridge Pkwy

  • Milano Pizza & Italian Kitchen – 1710 Briargate Blvd

  • Radisson Inn & Suites – 1645 Newport Rd

  • Kung Fu Noodle and Dumplings – 4543 Austin Bluffs Pkwy

βœ… Top Scores for Cleanliness

  • Lebowski’s Taproom – 3240 Centennial Blvd

    • Fun vibe, award-winning wings, very clean kitchen & bathrooms!

  • Nara Sushi & Grill – 3117 W Colorado Ave

  • Zesty Thai – 12225 Voyager Pkwy

  • Rizuto’s Ice Cream Shop – 4785 Barnes Rd

  • Cliff House at Pikes Peak – 306 CaΓ±on Ave

Health inspection results across El Paso County are available online for those wanting to check their favorite spots.

*Note: Most local restaurants take food safety incredibly seriously. In fact, many owners respond to violations swiftly and thoroughly, often making fixes the same day while they wait for reinspection.

πŸ₯Ύ Love Nature? You’ll Want to Explore Ute Valley Park

Courtesy of Jeff C

Ute Valley Park offers over 500 acres of natural beauty, popular with hikers, bikers, and dog walkers alike. With a variety of trailsβ€”from easy walks to technical ridesβ€”it’s a go-to spot for outdoor lovers in northwest COS.

The park includes Colorado Springs' first downhill bike trails, Almond Butter and Rattle Rocks, and has grown over the decades through donations and conservation funding. Rich in wildlife and archeological value, Ute Valley Park is not only a haven for recreation but also a protected natural resource, thanks in part to dedicated volunteers.

Due to the weather this weekend you want to head out early. Stay weather aware as your safety comes first.
