How do CNAs stay cool during shifts?

👉 They have lots of patients! 🤣

🥰 Why We Spotlight Local Businesses

Every Wednesday, we shine a light on the local entrepreneurs who make Colorado Springs vibrant and unique. When you support these featured businesses, you're investing in our neighbors' dreams and helping build a stronger community by creating jobs and keeping our city thriving. 🤗

🤔 Who's Going to Take Care of Us?

🤫 See why families are specifically requesting these special graduates

One woman arrived with downcast eyes, her spirit broken. Years of domestic abuse had convinced her she wasn't "smart enough" to succeed at anything. When Ellen MacAlester welcomed her that first day, she saw what others had missed – beneath the doubt lay a profound capacity for empathy that could transform lives.

After 45 years in nursing, Ellen recognized this pattern throughout Colorado Springs: compassionate people who could provide desperately needed care, if only someone would show them the way. Families struggled to find quality caregivers for aging parents or family members with chronic conditions, while potential healthcare workers lacked the pathway to turn their natural compassion into flourishing careers or confidence to be the caregiver they needed to be.

That's when A+ Nurse Aide School became the bridge. In this intimate classroom, you're personally mentored through an intensive one-month journey. Ellen's hands-on approach ensures no student falls through the cracks, providing personalized support as you master the 23 essential skills in a fully equipped lab before applying them with actual patients.

Today, that once-doubtful woman serves as a Certified Nursing Assistant, using her unique perspective to support other abuse survivors. Her transformation represents the school's deeper mission: creating caregivers who become the steady hand patients trust and the listening ear they look forward to seeing each day. With classes now filling up quickly in both Colorado Springs and Pueblo, this is just one of many life-changing journeys that begin in the A+ Nurse Aide School classroom every month.

If you feel called to care, whether for a loved one or as a meaningful career path, this could be your story too. With payment plans, expanding partnerships with local school districts, and workforce connections available, your journey can begin now.

📍 Southeast Strong Approved...Now What?

After years of residents speaking up about what they want for their neighborhoods, Colorado Springs City Council unanimously approved the Southeast Strong Neighborhood Plan on July 28.

The plan covers Deerfield Hills, Pikes Peak Park North and South, Soaring Eagles, Southborough and Spring Creek, and is meant to guide decisions and investments in southeast Colorado Springs for years to come.

Rather than approving a specific list of projects, think of this as a roadmap for what comes next. Priorities include attracting and supporting businesses, expanding housing opportunities, improving roads and connections between neighborhoods, increasing access to parks, strengthening public safety and creating more welcoming places for people to gather.

The plan grew from several years of input from residents, businesses, nonprofits and neighborhood groups through meetings, surveys and other community conversations.

Now comes the part that matters most: turning that vision into visible improvements residents can actually see and feel in their neighborhoods.

🌧️ Heads-Up Before It Pours

Heavy weekend rain caused enough damage to close Popes Valley Dr on Colorado Springs' west side after a fallen tree and debris blocked drainage, redirecting rushing water toward the roadway and eroding the ground beneath it. Repairs are expected to take 5-10 days, making this the City's second emergency road repair from heavy rain this summer after a June washout in North Cheyenne Cañon.

With additional storms possible, the bigger takeaway is for all of us: after an unusually dry stretch, intense rain can quickly produce runoff, erosion and flash flooding throughout the area, particularly near slopes, drainage channels and low-lying roads. Residents who notice blocked waterways or debris can report problems through the GoCOS app before the next downpour makes them worse. Full Story
