☣️ Hazmat Response At Microchip Warning Remains

As of the 3am this morning, a hazardous materials response continued overnight at Microchip, near Quail Lake (Tenderfoot Hill Rd between Venetucci and Tenderfoot Hill St), with a pre-evacuation warning remaining in place through the night for the surrounding area.

Here’s the latest from the Colorado Springs Fire Department as of 9pm last night:

  • 🔥 The fire remained active in a small, contained area inside the building

  • ☣️ Hazmat crews were entering the facility to monitor the fire and assess conditions

  • 🚒 Crews could not actively fight the fire inside because hazardous conditions made it unsafe to do so.

  • ⚠️ The pre-evacuation warning remained in effect overnight (Tenderfoot Hill Rd between Venetucci and Tenderfoot Hill St.) This is a warning to be prepared, not an evacuation order

  • 👨‍🚒 Fire crews remained on scene overnight to monitor the situation

  • 🚗 Residents were asked to continue avoiding the area

  • 📢 CSFD said its next scheduled update would be at 7am this morning Aug 17, unless conditions changed and emergency information needed to be released sooner. They stated in a comment that there are no concerns with the air quality in regards to this incident

Hazmat incidents can take longer to resolve because crews must identify and monitor hazardous materials and determine how to safely approach the affected area before taking further action.

If you’re in or near the pre-evacuation area, keep an eye on official alerts this morning in case conditions have changed overnight. Also, sign up for emergency alerts at peakalerts.org

👨‍💻 COS Makes Big Tech Foot the Bill

When a massive data center wants to move into Colorado Springs, the city just changed the rules. Under new “Community-First” standards, any data center that needs major electrical infrastructure must pay the full cost of building it, and pay for the capacity it reserves even if it never uses it. That means existing residents and businesses aren’t left holding the bag.

On water, the city is equally firm: data centers must prove their needs won’t compromise the long-term supply Colorado Springs depends on. If there are noise concerns, the city can require independent technical studies before giving the green light.

Public input is baked in too: neighborhood meetings, public hearings, and formal review processes ensure residents have a real voice before anything gets approved.

🏫 These Kids Are Finally Getting AC

Last year, Widefield School District 3 voters approved an $88 million bond for school repairs. Nine months in, the work is already showing up on campuses across the district.

At Pinello Elementary, a 63-year-old building, students are returning to brand new air conditioning this fall, along with new windows and doors. At North Preschool, a major renovation tackled termite damage that required rebuilding portions of the school with termite-proof materials. By summer’s end, about $37 million of the $88 million will already be committed to projects.

The bond costs homeowners about $5.29 per year per $100,000 of home value, and district leaders are hoping to finish everything in 3-4 years instead of the original 5 yr plan. Full Story
