🔥 40 Years to the Day

Fire Chief Randy Royal has announced his retirement for March 9, 2027, exactly 40 years to the day he first reported for duty in 1987

Colorado Springs is saying farewell to one of its finest. Fire Chief Randy Royal has announced his retirement for March 9, 2027, exactly 40 years to the day he first reported for duty in 1987.

In those four decades, Royal climbed from firefighter to chief, served 28 years as a paramedic, helped establish the CSFD Tactical Emergency Medical Services unit, and helped deliver 24 babies on the job, including one named after him. He leaves behind a shelf full of honors: two Medals of Distinguished Service, 2023 Colorado Fire Chief of the Year, and 2024 International Career Fire Chief of the Year.

Chief Royal guided this community through some of its hardest moments, including the 1997 blizzard, the 2007 Cattle West Apartment Fire, and the 2012 Waldo Canyon and 2013 Black Forest fires. Mayor Yemi praised his dedication and the lasting legacy he has built for Colorado Springs. Full Story

🥾 A Trail That Runs Through History

The Rock Island Trail runs 6 to 10 miles east-west, following the historic Rock Island Railroad corridor

Image Courtesy of Trails and Open Space Coalition

Looking for an easy, paved trail that stretches across Colorado Springs? The Rock Island Trail runs 6 to 10 miles east-west, following the historic Rock Island Railroad corridor from Weber St to Powers alongside Constitution Ave.

The path is concrete and asphalt, gently sloped (uphill heading east), and open to walkers, bikers, rollerbladers, skateboarders, e-bikers, dog walkers, and adaptive cyclists. It's ADA accessible and connects to Shooks Run Trail, Pikes Peak Greenway, Homestead Trail, and Palmer Park.
