π₯ Memorial North's $463M Makeover

Today marks a milestone for healthcare in Colorado Springs. UCHealth officially broke ground on a $463 million expansion at Memorial Hospital North that will nearly double the size of the facility. The centerpiece is a new six-story inpatient tower that will add 36 medical-surgical beds and 14 ICU beds when it opens, with capacity to eventually grow to 320 total beds.
The project also adds four new operating rooms, 12 additional emergency department exam rooms, a laboratory expansion, and an 875-space parking structure. When complete in 2029, this is the kind of investment that changes what residents in north Colorado Springs can expect when they need care most. Full Story

π» Why Couldn't This Bear Cub Be Saved?

A difficult scene on Struthers Rd near Baptist Road in northern Colorado Springs is sparking emotional reactions across the community. On Friday morning, a bear cub was spotted by a passing driver sitting on the grass near the sidewalk, appearing to be in distress. When a Colorado Parks and Wildlife officer arrived, the decision was made to euthanize it on the spot.
The eyewitness who called 911, said he expected the cub to be tranquilized and cared for. CPW Assistant Area Wildlife Manager explained that the bear had severe physical injuries that left it past rehabilitation, and that sedation would only have increased the animal's pain and stress. CPW said this was the most humane option available. Their state rehabilitation center is currently at capacity, and Colorado's overall bear population remains healthy. Full Story

π TRIVIA: How Did Christmas Land Here?

Seventy Years of Christmas Memories
For generations of Colorado Springs families, the trip up Ute Pass has meant a visit to Santa. The North Pole, Santaβs Worshop opened in Cascade on June 16, 1956, bringing to life a village inspired by an 8-year-old girl's description of Santa's home, translated into designs by former Disney artist Arto Monaco.

Question: What unusual screening did the park's original helpers undergo before joining Santa's crew?
Imagine those first visits: 12 Alpine-style buildings, animals to feed and handmade marionettes entertaining children, but no amusement rides until 1958. The attraction was entering a world where Christmas didn't have to wait for December.

Even the entertainment carried a little generosity: musician Rufus Porter's monkey tipped its hat when visitors dropped pennies into its cup. Those coins, combined with wishing-well donations, helped provide Christmas gifts for children in need, making small moments of delight mean something beyond the park.

Today, that storybook village offers two dozen vintage rides, visits with Santa and mountain views, but it isn't just for kids. Grown-ups can browse Christmas shops, watch the on-site glassblower or share funnel cake and hot chocolate between rides, enjoying a little childhood nostalgia of their own.

Answer: A Denver charm school helped select the original 50 "gnomes," who also passed aptitude tests for dealing with the public. Apparently, working for Santa took more than a cheerful costume! *Source
