π‘ Your Utility Bill Goes Up in January

If you've opened your utility bill lately and done a little double take, you're not alone. And come Jan 1, 2027, it's set to climb a bit more.
Under the 2027 budget, the average household with all 4 services from Colorado Springs Utilities (electric, natural gas, water and wastewater) will pay about $16 more a month, for a typical bill of around $258. Base rates rise 6.5% for electric, 6.5% for water, 9% for wastewater and 4% for natural gas, as part of the 5-year plan to rebuild aging pipes and power lines.
It isn't final yet. City Council reviews the budget Nov 10 and takes its final vote Nov 24, so there's still time to tell your council member what you think. Curious what it means for your house? Try the CSU bill calculator. And if money is already tight, please don't wait until it's a crisis. CSU's customer assistance programs offer payment plans and bill help, and a quick call can take a lot of worry off your shoulders. Full Story

π΅ Medicare Choices? Free, Friendly Help

If your mailbox is suddenly stuffed with Medicare flyers and your phone won't stop ringing, it's that time of year. Medicare Open Enrollment runs Oct 15 - Dec 7, and it's the one window each year to switch your drug plan or Medicare Advantage plan for 2027.
Here's the good news: you don't have to sort through it alone, and you don't have to talk to a salesperson. The Pikes Peak Area Agency on Aging's Senior Insurance Assistance program offers free, unbiased counseling. They don't sell anything. A trained counselor sits down with you, looks at your prescriptions and doctors, and helps you compare plans so you can pick what's truly best for you, not for a commission.
Call (719) 471-2096 or toll-free 1 (888) 696-7213 to set up a time, and have your Medicare card and medication list handy. Appointments fill up fast near the deadline, so call this week. Know a parent, neighbor or friend who's been stressing over this? Forward this to them, it might be the kindest thing you do today.
β° Extra Hour of Sleep This Sunday

Ahh, the one time a year we get something back. Daylight saving time ends Sun, Nov 1 at 2am, so set your clocks back one hour before bed Saturday night and enjoy that bonus hour of sleep.
Your phone will take care of itself, but don't forget the oven, microwave, car dashboard and that old clock in the guest room. Expect darker evenings, too, with sunset around 4:50pm, so plan walks and errands a little earlier.
While you're up on that step stool, give your home a little love: test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and swap in fresh batteries. The Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends testing them every month and replacing any smoke alarm that's more than 10 years old. It takes 5 minutes and it could save the people you love.
