🐂 Pikes Peak Rodeo Starts Today
Preparations at the Norris-Penrose Event Center are almost complete as the city readies itself for the Pikes Peak or Bust NFR Open Rodeo. Competitors are arriving for this five day event, and the final setup, which includes installing a big screen, hanging banners, and stocking concessions, is in full swing. Rodeo management team have been working for three weeks to ensure everything is ready. The event kicks off today at 7pm and runs through Sat. July 13. Spectators are encouraged to arrive early. For details and to buy tickets, visit the official rodeo website.
🐴 New Partnership Boosts Sheriff's Mounted Unit
El Paso County Sheriff Joseph Roybal and Norris-Penrose Event Center General Manager Kyle Park announced a long-term partnership allowing the Sheriff's Mounted Unit to operate full-time from the event center’s equestrian facilities. This collaboration will enhance the unit's ability to perform patrol, search and rescue, and ceremonial duties, while also improving event and training coordination at the center. The Mounted Unit, consisting of 12 deputies and 5 horses, is the only one of its kind in the Pikes Peak region and provides various community services. The partnership will also expand training opportunities for law enforcement nationwide, supporting crime reduction and Colorado Springs' Western heritage.
🐱 Quick Action Saves Kitten on I-25
The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region's Animal Law Enforcement rescued a kitten named Barney from I-25 after he wandered onto the busy highway. With temperatures reaching 90 degrees, Barney was found exhausted and panting. Lieutenant Napieralski and Sergeant Michon caught the distressed kitten and brought him to the shelter, where he received water, food, and a safe place to rest. Barney is now recovering well and is out of danger.
️👢 Trivia: What’s the True Legacy of the Girls of the West?
The Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo, a cherished tradition in Colorado Springs since 1913 (although known by different names in its early years), has always celebrated the region's deep-rooted Western heritage.
One of the most captivating aspects of this event is the role of the "Girl of the West." This title was initially awarded to Dawn Norris in 1922, who was chosen as the first "Queen of the Rodeo" through a write-in ballot organized by the Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce and the Gazette. Over time, the competition evolved, and responsibilities expanded. The title was later changed to "Girl of the West" to reflect their role as ambassadors for the rodeo, rather than just rodeo queens.*
🏇 What was the main duty of the original "Rodeo Queen" now called "Girls of the West"? |
