🥵 Stay Safe: Hiking Tips for Hot Days

Hiking Tips for Hot Days

As Colorado Springs braces for a heat wave, hiking enthusiasts are urged to take precautions. The state's peak hiking season coincides with the hottest period of the year, making it essential to hike safely to avoid heat-related illnesses.

To manage the heat, experts recommend planning hikes during the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late afternoon. It's crucial to dress in light-colored, breathable clothing, apply sunscreen to protect against the sun’s intensified rays at high altitudes, and stay hydrated by sipping water frequently. Additionally, bringing salty snacks can help replenish electrolytes lost through sweat.

Taking regular breaks in shaded areas and being aware of the signs of heat stroke—such as throbbing headache, dizziness, muscle cramps, nausea, disorientation, and lack of sweating—are vital steps to ensure safety. If any symptoms of heat stroke occur, it's imperative to get out of the heat and seek medical attention immediately. *Full Story

🐻 CM Zoo and CPW Save Orphaned Bear Cub

A black bear cub, orphaned and alone, was rescued from a tree at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo by Colorado Parks and Wildlife. After a health check, the cub will be taken to a rehabilitation center and eventually released into a man-made den for the winter. The goal is for the bear to hibernate and emerge in the spring capable of surviving on its own.
