🏘️ Colorado Springs Expands with Amara Vote

City Council

Colorado Springs City Council has approved the annexation of over 3,000 acres for the Amara development, a significant project expected to add nearly 10,000 homes and create over 3,300 jobs. The development, proposed by La Plata Communities, aims to provide affordable housing in a growing region. While the move addresses housing shortages, it raises concerns about water supply and infrastructure. Colorado Springs Utilities confirms sufficient water availability but highlights the need for substantial infrastructure investments. Public opinions are divided, with proponents highlighting benefits for military families and opponents warning about resource strain. A final council vote on annexation ordinances is set for August 13.

🛏️ New Shelter Proposed in Homeless Plan

Homeless Camp

Colorado Springs is developing a long-term plan to tackle homelessness, possibly using pandemic funds to construct a new shelter. Mayor Yemi Mobolade's administration is focusing on mental health and housing, seeking feedback from local partners and residents. The new shelter could include non-congregational rooms to minimize COVID-19 spread and cater to families or those with medical needs. Community feedback sessions will start mid-August, with the plan expected to be completed in a few months. Full Story

⚖️ Court Rules on Water Tank Mountain Shadows Dispute

Wilson Water Tank

According to KOAA, the lawsuit by Mountain Shadows residents against Colorado Springs City Council and CSU over the Wilson Water Tank's construction has been dismissed. The court found no conflict of interest in the council's decision, as the city’s charter allows council members to serve on the CSU board. The residents had contested the council's reversal of a planning commission decision to halt the project. Full Story
