π Labor Day Lift Off Visionary Passes Away Suddenly
Scott Appelman, a leading figure in the hot air ballooning industry and co-producer of the annual Colorado Springs Labor Day Lift Off, died unexpectedly at 66. As the founder of Rainbow Ryders, one of the largest ballooning companies in the U.S., Appelman was known for his passion and dedication to the craft, helping shape the ballooning experience for thousands. His contributions over the past 40 years, included not only commercial success but also inspiring moments for many, such as marriage proposals and bucket-list flights.
In addition to his business achievements, Appelman was known for his humor, generosity, and commitment to safety. His leadership and mentoring influenced the next generation of balloon pilots, ensuring that his values would endure long after his passing. The Colorado Springs community and the ballooning industry at large are grieving the loss of a visionary whose legacy will continue through the events and business he helped build.

Evans Army Community Hospital has launched an initiative to combat food insecurity within the military community by screening primary care patients and offering access to resources. In partnership with local and state agencies, this program aims to improve health outcomes and military readiness by addressing a key social determinant of health. Research shows over 25% of active-duty members face food insecurity, with those on military bases at greater risk. The hospital's population health team is actively documenting food insecurity cases and tailoring support to meet the specific needs of affected families, ensuring access to the necessary resources.
π©οΈ Airshow Drama: Heat Caused Hospitalization π
At the Pikes Peak Regional Airshow, extreme heat caused roughly 140 people to seek emergency treatment, with 11 being hospitalized over the weekend. Event staff and emergency responders acted swiftly, treating most patients at the scene, thus preventing more severe outcomes.
The successful airshow, which featured performances by the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and showcased various aircraft, had sold-out tickets for both days of the event. The National Weather Service had warned of extreme heat, and attendees were repeatedly reminded to stay hydrated and protect themselves from the heat.

π¨ Officers and Firefighters Targeted with Rocks
Colorado Springs police arrested a man after he threw rocks at officers and firefighters who were responding to a possible shooting on Potter Drive, near Mitchell High School, just after midnight yesterday. Although the man had no connection to the initial emergency, he began targeting the first responders with rocks before fleeing the scene. Officers quickly caught and detained him, and no one was injured in the incident. Authorities later determined that no evidence of a shooting was found in the area.
