💡 Springs Utilities Proposes Rate Changes

Colorado Springs Utilities

Colorado Springs Utilities will propose a series of rate increases and a new time-of-day pricing model for 2025 at a Utilities Board meeting on Wed, Aug. 21. The proposed rate hikes include a 6.5% increase for electricity and water, 4% for natural gas, and 9% for wastewater annually through 2029.

Additionally, the introduction of an "Energy-wise" rate would encourage customers to use electricity during off-peak hours, potentially reducing overall energy costs. These measures are intended to support $3.7 billion in infrastructure investments over the next five years, necessary to meet regulatory demands and ensure reliable service. The proposed changes will be reviewed in City Council hearings, with a final vote in November. If approved, the new rates would take effect in 2025.

Did You See the Fire on Shelley Ave?

gas line fire

A gas line in Colorado Springs was struck by lightning on yesterday around 5:30pm, igniting a fire in the 4000 block of Shelley Ave, near S Academy and Airport Rd. Colorado Springs Fire Department responded promptly, working alongside Colorado Springs Utilities to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby buildings. Thanks to their swift action, the fire was brought under control without causing significant damage.

In a joint effort with the CSFD and the City Forestry Department, Colorado Springs has initiated fire mitigation in Stratton Open Space. The project, spanning more than 260 acres, is designed to reduce fire risk while preserving the natural landscape. Stratton Open Space will remain open throughout the operation, but visitors should be prepared for temporary trail closures and detours. The City encourages caution and thanks the community for their patience during this essential work.

🏞️ Trivia: Colorado Springs' Spiritual Legacy"

Did you know that Garden of the Gods holds deep spiritual significance for the Southern Ute Indian tribe? This iconic park was considered the Garden of Eden by the Utes, who believed their people were created here.  For centuries, Ute families gathered here each winter, connecting spiritually with the ancient rock formations. They saw Pikes Peak as the center of their world, believing it held a special connection to the heavens.

Sadly, this spiritual haven was disrupted in the 1870s when European settlers arrived, leading to conflict and the forced relocation of the Ute people.

🤔 What did the Ute Indians believe was located at the summit of Pikes Peak, known as the "Great White Mountain"?
