๐Ÿ‘ถ Behind the Scenes: Tackling Family Homelessness

In Colorado Springs, the Family Solutions Collaborative, consisting of 56 local organizations, meets monthly to tackle the toughest cases of family homelessness and instability. These behind-the-scenes efforts connect families with essential services, addressing issues like housing, transportation, and childcare. Despite resource limitations, the collaborative plays a crucial role in stabilizing at-risk families. The groupโ€™s work has led to projects like the Helen Hunt Campus, (formerly Helen Hunt Elementary being converted into an apartment complex for homeless families) which will provide more housing options for those in need. Full Story

๐Ÿป Fall Bear Alert: How to Stay Safe

Bear Aware

As fall arrives in Colorado Springs, bear activity is expected to surge due to their increased caloric intake ahead of winter hibernation. Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) advises residents to take precautions, including securing garbage, locking doors, and removing bird feeders and if you see one. If you see a bear, make loud noises, bang loud objects and throw things at it to scare it off. For those with livestock, CPW recommends secure enclosures and scent deterrents. These steps are essential to minimizing bear encounters and ensuring safety during this active season. For more information visit the CPW website, Living with Bears section.

๐Ÿš” Smash-and-Grab Robbery Trend Continues

Smash and grab crime

Colorado Springs has seen a troubling surge in smash-and-grab robberies, with the latest incident marking the 29th of its kind in 2024. Early on August 24, a stolen vehicle was driven through the entrance of a veteran-owned pawn and gun shop, allowing thieves to steal gaming consoles. Although firearms were secured, the store faces over $30,000 in damages. The police and ATF are investigating as the community grapples with this escalating crime wave.
