🌇 The New Skyline for Colorado Springs

Ever wondered what happened to that iconic power plant on the Colorado Springs skyline for nearly 100 years? The Martin Drake Power Plant has been demolished, marking the end of an era in the city's energy history. The plant, decommissioned in 2022, was brought down as part of Colorado Springs' shift towards sustainable energy. Six natural gas units will now handle peak energy demands, and future plans for the site are under consideration. The demolition, costing $20 million, is part of the city's broader plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transition away from coal.

👮 High Schoolers, What If You Could Advise the Police Chief?

What happens when high school students get a direct line to the Chief of Police? Colorado Springs is about to find out. Chief Adrian Vasquez is expanding his Youth Advisory Council, offering 40 students from various backgrounds the chance to share their perspectives on city issues and public safety. Through monthly meetings, participants will engage in open discussions, gain insight into police operations, and take part in hands-on training simulations. 

Applications are open until September 10th, with the program aimed at fostering trust and understanding between the youth and law enforcement. If you know any High Schoolers that might be a good fit, let them know about this incredible opportunity!

🏞️ Oak Meadows Park’s Accessible Makeover

Oak Meadows Park, located in the Broadmoor Bluffs neighborhood (4690 Farthing Dr) on the southwest side of Colorado Springs, has undergone a significant transformation. The park now features an inclusive playground, ADA-compliant parking, and accessible sidewalks. This two-year renovation was driven by community collaboration and funded by the Oak Meadows Community and the TOPS sales tax program. The park’s improvements reflect a broader city initiative to make public spaces more accessible, with similar projects planned for other parks across Colorado Springs.
