🚓 CSPD's New Approach to Safety
This is interesting…Colorado Springs Police Department will begin training officers in Brazilian jiu-jitsu to improve their handling of confrontations following a recent audit by the Police Executive Research Forum. The audit found that most officers felt underprepared in areas like crisis intervention and de-escalation. The new training is part of a broader initiative to modernize the department's practices, including plans for an advanced training facility. The department received over a million dollars in funding to support a three-year study going forward, on the impact of jiu-jitsu training. The goal is to create a more effective and accountable police force that uses non-lethal tactics to ensure safety.
🏗️ Workers Win $138K Back Pay—Could You?
The U.S. Department of Labor recently recovered over $138,000 in back wages and damages for 27 construction workers employed by Bulletproof Plumbing & Heating Inc. in Colorado Springs, who were denied proper overtime pay. The company compensated employees at their regular hourly rate for overtime hours, violating federal law.
This settlement highlights the importance of understanding your rights as an employee. If you suspect you’ve been underpaid for overtime work, there are resources available to help you verify and report any discrepancies. The Department of Labor offers an online search tool, a new mobile app for tracking hours, and a helpline for confidential guidance on wage claims. It’s worth checking to see if you’re owed any back pay.
🍂 Why Are Fall Leaves So Colorful?
The changing colors of fall leaves are a result of three factors: pigments in the leaves, the lengthening of nights, and weather conditions. Chlorophyll, which keeps leaves green in the warmer months, fades as nights get longer, revealing carotenoids and anthocyanins that produce the yellow, orange, and red hues we associate with autumn. Species and weather also play a role—ideal conditions include sunny days and cool nights.
While Colorado has enjoyed a wet and mild summer, recent warm days may affect how vibrant and long-lasting the display will be. Curious if this means your favorite spots will be glowing this fall? Only time will tell so make sure to take a trip to see the more vibrant colors around town in the next month. Full Story

🥾 Explore Aspens at Mueller State Park 🍂
According to Hiking Bob, as fall colors begin to emerge, nearby Mueller State Park offers an ideal destination for those looking to experience the golden hues of our beloved aspens. Although Colorado Springs itself sits too low in elevation for vast color changes right now, a short drive west on Highway 67 brings visitors to Mueller's picturesque trails.
The park offers two distinct hiking routes: a longer loop beginning at the visitor center that takes hikers past four serene ponds, and a shorter trail at Grouse Mountain that provides different but equally striking views. The changing light between morning and afternoon hikes dramatically alters the scenery, so both times of day are worth a visit.
